BIDU heads into its August 18 Q2 earnings with short sellers meaningfully pulling back — a sharp reversal from conditions that looked far more hostile just weeks ago.
The borrow market tells the most striking story. Availability has swung from near-zero to comfortable: in mid-July, almost every share in the lending pool was committed, with availability as low as 5%. That has unwound sharply. Availability now reads at 124% — meaning the pool of lendable shares actually exceeds current short demand — and cost to borrow has more than halved from its July highs of around 1.2% to roughly 0.60%. Mirroring the improved supply, estimated short interest dropped more than 21% over the past week to roughly 8.1 million shares, after peaking near 11.7 million in late July. The borrow squeeze that dominated July has largely dissipated heading into the print.
Options positioning is only modestly cautious, not alarmed. The put/call ratio runs at 0.66, slightly above its 20-day average of 0.63 but well within one standard deviation — no material demand for downside protection stands out. The stock itself has slipped about 5.5% over the past week and is down roughly 5.5% over the past month to $103.67, meaning the shares arrive at earnings in a softened state without aggressive defensive hedging layered on top.
The analyst community is largely positive in rating but increasingly reserved on price. JP Morgan and BofA both trimmed targets in mid-July — JP Morgan to $205, BofA to $165 — while maintaining bullish ratings, a signal that conviction exists but valuation enthusiasm has moderated. Barclays sits at Equal-Weight with a $124 target, close to where the stock is trading now, implying limited upside in the base case from that vantage point. The bull case centres on Baidu's 50%-plus search dominance and AI Cloud revenue expanding rapidly — up 34% in the first half of 2025 — alongside AI-native marketing services that reportedly grew more than 260% year-on-year to RMB 2.8 billion. Bears counter that the core advertising business is contracting, with a 15% revenue decline tied to generative AI cannibalising traditional search ad load, and that monetisation recovery remains low-visibility. The forward earnings picture is genuinely bifurcated: the 12-month forward EPS growth factor ranks in the 98th percentile of the universe, yet near-term EPS momentum over both 30 and 90 days sits in the bottom quartile.
Past prints offer a mixed precedent. After the May 2026 results, the stock gained roughly 1.7% on the day but fell 6.3% over the following five days. The February 2026 print was more severe: a 6.2% drop on the day and an 11.1% decline over five sessions. Both episodes suggest the initial headline reaction has mattered less than the multi-day read-through. Capital Research and Management added more than four million shares as recently as July 31, a notable accumulation that contrasts with the drift lower in price.
The August 18 print is therefore less about whether Baidu's AI narrative is credible and more about whether the advertising revenue slide is bottoming — and whether AI Cloud momentum is moving fast enough to offset it at the margin level the current valuation implies.
