Agilent Technologies heads into its August 20 earnings report with the analyst community growing more constructive and short sellers having largely cleared the field — a setup tilted more cleanly bullish than at any point in the past month.
The dominant story since the last article is that short covering has continued. Short interest held near its post-collapse level of 2.0% of the free float through August 13, with barely a flicker of rebuilding after the near-25% single-session unwind reported last week. Borrow conditions confirm the lack of conviction on the short side: availability is effectively unlimited, and the cost to borrow has edged up to 0.48% — a 42% rise on the week — but from such a low base that it signals no genuine squeeze pressure. The ORTEX short score has also dropped from 34 earlier in the month to 31.4, moving further from bearish territory. Options positioning is mildly more defensive, with the put/call ratio at 0.57, modestly above its 20-day average of 0.54, though still well below any extreme reading. The z-score of 0.75 suggests hedging rather than alarm.
The analyst picture has shifted in Agilent's favour. Morgan Stanley raised its price target to $175 from $160 on August 12 — just three trading days before the print — while reiterating Overweight. The mean consensus target has climbed to $160, against a current price of $148.53, implying roughly 8% upside. The broader direction of travel since late May has been positive: BofA, TD Cowen, RBC Capital, and Barclays all lifted targets, with only HSBC moving in the other direction (trimming to $165, still well above the current price). Piper Sandler initiated at Neutral with a $150 target, the sole note of caution. Bulls point to Agilent's diversified exposure across biopharma, chemicals, and diagnostics as a buffer against any single market slowdown. Bears flag China as the key swing factor — Agilent carries meaningful revenue exposure there — alongside softer demand from academic and government customers and a valuation that, at roughly 23x trailing earnings, leaves limited room for disappointment.
Earnings history adds an interesting dimension. The last print, on May 27, produced a one-day gain of nearly 18% and a five-day move of more than 19% — an outlier by any measure, suggesting the prior quarter delivered something well beyond consensus expectations. The stock has recovered 10% over the past month to $148.53, partly recapturing ground lost earlier in the year, and close peers including CRL and WAT have also posted solid weekly gains, suggesting broader sector sentiment has improved into the reporting season.
Thursday's print will test whether Agilent can back up its blockbuster prior quarter with evidence that the demand recovery in biopharma and instrumentation is durable — or whether the China exposure and government budget headwinds resurface as a credible constraint on the growth narrative.
