OSIS heads into its August 20 earnings report with short sellers in clear retreat — but the stock still carries a meaningful bearish overhang that makes the print consequential.
Short interest has fallen sharply over the past month, down 18.5% in shares to roughly 11.5% of the free float — still a high absolute level, but the direction is unambiguous. Bears have been cutting positions steadily since early July, when short interest peaked above 2.4 million shares. The borrow market reinforces this picture: availability has loosened considerably, now running at 197%, up nearly 20% on the week. That means there is roughly twice as much stock available to lend as there is currently borrowed — a comfortable cushion that removes any squeeze pressure heading into the event. Cost to borrow remains low at 0.55%, barely moved over the past month. The stock itself closed at $229.87, up about 8% over the past month but down slightly on the week, with options traders showing no particular hedging bias — the put/call ratio of 0.10 is essentially flat against its 20-day average, and well below the 52-week high of 7.57 that reflected a very different sentiment regime in early July.
The bull-bear debate centres on whether OSIS can sustain its government contract momentum and demonstrate that recent earnings estimates — which rank in the 84th percentile for forward EPS growth year-on-year — are achievable rather than aspirational. Bulls point to CBP funding momentum and consistent Security segment execution as evidence the business is on a durable growth path. Bears counter that the Security segment's dependence on federal appropriations makes revenue timing inherently lumpy, and that the company's Healthcare business adds volatility tied to hospital capital budgets. BofA trimmed its target to $300 from $315 in late July while holding a Buy — a modest haircut that signals the Street still sees meaningful upside from current levels but is becoming more measured on valuation. The consensus mean target of $298 implies roughly 30% upside, though the stock's 18x trailing PE and 12x EV/EBITDA are not demanding for a company with this earnings revision trajectory.
History adds a sobering note. The most recent print, in early May, sent OSIS down nearly 17% on the day and the stock shed a further point over the following week — a brutal reaction that explains much of the short interest that has since been unwound. Founder and Executive Chairman Deepak Chopra sold $5.6 million of stock at $281 on May 4, the day of that report, and sold a further $5 million in February — consistent insider sales from the top that, while not necessarily signalling concern about the business, do cap the enthusiasm of those looking for an alignment-of-incentives story. Institutional ownership is broadly diversified, with BlackRock holding 15.5% and Fidelity 10.5%, both adding modestly to positions as recently as July.
Thursday's report will test whether the sharp earnings miss that drove the May collapse was a one-off disruption or the beginning of a downward revision cycle — and whether the growth momentum baked into forward estimates is close enough to reality to rebuild confidence at a stock trading 23% below where analysts were pointing just three months ago.
