Eli Lilly and Company has answered the question posed two weeks ago — $1,200 is a floor now, not a ceiling.
The stock closed Tuesday at $1,225.73, up 3.6% on the day and nearly 1% on the week. That advance matters more in context than in isolation. The prior note flagged the $1,180 consolidation zone as a test of whether the post-earnings momentum had real legs. This week's move resolves that test decisively to the upside. The one-month gain has extended to 4.0%, and LLY is running ahead of the broad pharma complex again. JNJ added 4.4% on the week and MRK gained 3.6%, so the sector tide is rising — but LLY's 3.6% single-day move on Tuesday tells a stock-specific story on top of that tailwind. AZN and NOVN both declined slightly on the week, widening the gap between Lilly and its European large-cap peers.
The positioning picture is as clean as it's been in months. Short interest has retreated further — now at 0.97% of free float, down 7.8% on the week and still fading after the post-earnings capitulation that began August 5. The borrow market reflects the same directional signal: cost to borrow ticked up to 0.34% this week, about 24% above where it was seven days ago, but the absolute level remains trivially low for a stock of this size. Availability is effectively unlimited, with over 539 million shares available to borrow against roughly 8.7 million shares short. Nothing in the lending market suggests any squeeze dynamic or meaningful bearish pressure rebuilding. The ORTEX short score has drifted down to 30.7 from 31.4 two weeks ago — a low and falling reading that reinforces the picture of declining short conviction. Options positioning is measured rather than alarmed: the put/call ratio at 1.28 is just marginally above its 20-day average of 1.26, a z-score of 0.23, which is essentially neutral. Hedging demand has not spiked despite the stock's run.
The Street has been decisively constructive since the Q2 beat. Following the August 5 print, Wells Fargo lifted its target to $1,330 from $1,280, Cantor Fitzgerald moved to $1,410 from $1,350, and Truist nudged to $1,376 — all within the past two weeks, all maintaining positive ratings. The consensus mean target now sits at $1,311, implying roughly 7% upside from Tuesday's close. Citigroup's July target of $1,600 is an outlier on the high end and worth noting for its directional confidence, even if the gap to the current price is wide. Factor scores back the bull case structurally: LLY ranks in the 93rd percentile on analyst recommendation divergence, 80th on short score rank, and 78th and 76th on 30-day and 90-day EPS momentum. The one genuine soft spot is the forward earnings growth metric, which ranks only in the 31st percentile — a reflection of tough year-over-year comparisons as the tirzepatide ramp anniversaries itself, the same dynamic flagged in the bear case around pricing pressure and slowing cardiometabolic growth.
Insider activity over the past 90 days has been uniformly one-directional: net selling of roughly $19.3 million in value and 16,439 shares. The most recent trades include a $7.6 million sale by division president Patrik Jonsson on August 17 and a $5.95 million sale by General Counsel Anat Hakim on August 7. These are the kinds of programmatic executive sales that are routine at a stock sitting near all-time highs — none carry especially high significance scores — but the consistent outflow is worth noting against the backdrop of an institutional base that is broadly adding. BlackRock added 1.16 million shares in the most recent reporting period, FMR added 1.77 million, and State Street added 606,000. The Lilly Endowment, the largest holder at 10.1% of shares, trimmed 1.52 million shares as of June 30 — its own long-running programme of gradual diversification rather than a strategic signal.
Next quarter's earnings are scheduled for October 29. The historical pattern is worth keeping in mind: the August 5 print delivered a 6.8% single-day gain and extended to 9.4% over five days — the strongest post-earnings reaction in recent history. The May print was quieter, up 2.7% on the day and essentially flat over five days. With the stock now well above the August 5 close and the Street freshly aligned on targets above $1,300, the October print will be less about confirming tirzepatide momentum and more about whether forward guidance holds up against the pricing and competition headwinds the bears are flagging.
