PFE has extended its recovery to close at $27.25, up 8.8% over the past month, and the insider buying story that defined last week's note has grown more compelling — the CEO himself stepped in on August 12.
Albert Bourla purchased 38,000 shares at $26.34, a transaction worth just over $1 million. That follows the two director purchases flagged last week — Mortimer Buckley at $25.52 and Ronald Blaylock at $25.46 — and pushes the 90-day net insider position to roughly $3.1 million bought. Executive chair and CEO purchases carry different weight from director activity. Bourla's buy at the current price level signals a degree of personal conviction, not just board optics, and the cluster of purchases across three separate insiders within ten days reinforces rather than softens that read.
Options positioning offers a sharp and notable contrast to that confidence. The put/call ratio has dropped to 0.81 — more than three standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.84. That is the most call-heavy reading of the past year, which usually reflects bullish sentiment or demand for upside exposure. The timing is interesting: a PCR this far below its recent norm, coinciding with a month-long price recovery and cluster insider buying, suggests the options market is chasing the move rather than hedging against it.
Short sellers are telling the same story they told last week, only more so. Short interest fell another 12.5% across this week to 2.55% of the free float, continuing a decline from the late-July peak near 3.4%. With availability effectively unlimited — over 9,000% against shares borrowed, meaning the lending pool is essentially untapped — there is no mechanical pressure on shorts to cover quickly. The covering is discretionary, driven by positioning rather than borrow stress. Borrow costs ticked up 35% on the week but remain trivially cheap at 0.49%, consistent with a name where institutional supply is abundant.
The Street has not kept pace with the stock's recovery. Guggenheim cut its target to $31 on August 7 while maintaining its Buy rating — a downward revision immediately after the Q2 print that drove the stock's early-August surge. JPMorgan, BofA, and HSBC all hold Neutral or equivalent ratings with targets clustered in the $26–$28 range, bracketing the current price rather than offering meaningful upside. The consensus mean target of $28.60 implies only about 5% further from here. The forward earnings picture is better: the 12-month forward EPS growth factor scores in the 88th percentile of the ORTEX universe, suggesting analysts have materially revised estimates higher, even if price targets have moved the other way. The dividend score ranks in the 95th percentile, a reminder that income-oriented holders — including BlackRock, which added 31 million shares in July to reach a 9.3% stake — have reasons to hold that have little to do with capital gains.
The Q3 earnings date lands on November 3. With insider buying at current prices, analysts clustered around fair value, and shorts reducing exposure, the next meaningful data point on this recovery's durability is what management says about gross-to-net trajectory on Vyndaqel and Ibrance — the bear case that the Street has been watching since the start of the year.
