Synopsys heads into its August 26 earnings release with analysts pulling targets lower, the stock trading well below consensus price objectives, and last quarter's painful double-digit drop still fresh in institutional memory.
The most telling signal this week came from the Street. Morgan Stanley trimmed its target to $500 from $525 on August 19, keeping an Equal-Weight rating, while Wells Fargo cut to $450 from $535 a week earlier — a combined $110 of target erosion from two neutral-rated houses in eight days. That follows a Piper Sandler upgrade to Overweight in late June with a $550 target, so the directional read is mixed rather than uniformly cautious: a handful of bulls are pointing at $550-$610, while the sideline crowd is quietly marking down its numbers. The consensus mean lands at $560, implying roughly 38% upside from Tuesday's close of $404. That gap is unusually wide and partly reflects the stock's underperformance — SNPS is down about 12% year-to-date and has gained only 5% over the past month after bouncing off recent lows. The bear case is concrete: intensifying competition from in-house chip design at systems companies, and the Multiphysics Fusion solution's monetisation not expected until FY27. Bulls counter with EDA tool dominance and structural demand from AI-driven semiconductor design — a tailwind that has benefited close peer , which fell 3.4% on the week versus SNPS's 1.6% decline, suggesting both names are under similar pressure into the reporting period.
Positioning carries no urgency on the short side. Short interest is running at 2.8% of free float — a low absolute level — and fell nearly 8% over the past week as short sellers reduced exposure ahead of the print. Borrowing costs are negligible at 0.42%, and share availability is effectively unlimited, meaning there is no friction for anyone wanting to establish or exit a short position. The ORTEX short score of 32.9 is well below the mid-range, consistent with a stock where bears are not building conviction. Options tell a slightly different story: the put/call ratio is 1.18, marginally below its 20-day average of 1.20, so options positioning is not more defensive than usual right now — a slight easing from the more cautious readings seen mid-week when the PCR touched 1.25. Overall, the lending market is loose and short positioning looks disengaged rather than active.
The earnings history adds context worth noting. Last quarter's report, in late May, sent the stock down 10.1% the next day and left it 6.8% lower five sessions later — a reminder that the market has been unforgiving when results disappoint. Factor scores offer modest comfort: a 68th-percentile reading on 12-month forward EPS growth and a 69th-percentile days-to-cover rank suggest the fundamental trajectory is improving, even if a low 19th-percentile EPS surprise rank reflects a company that has not been consistently beating estimates recently.
On the institutional side, the largest holders are adding modestly rather than trimming. BlackRock added 338,000 shares through July 31, State Street added 175,000, and Van Eck added 744,000. Insider activity is less constructive — the CEO sold $6.7 million in June at $459, though that trade looks like a routine scheduled sale rather than a directional signal given its modest significance score. The net insider position over 90 days is marginally positive on a share-count basis but skewed by awards rather than open-market purchases.
The next week's earnings print is therefore less about whether Synopsys is growing and more about whether management can offer credible guidance on FY27 Multiphysics Fusion revenue — the specific line-item that divides the bulls from the neutral camp.
