Liquidia Corporation heads into October with an unusual split: shorts have built their largest position in months while options traders refuse to hedge, a tension that a 4% Tuesday pullback to $70.69 has done little to resolve.
Short sellers have been unusually active this month. Short interest has climbed to 15.6% of free float as of 29 September, up 10% over the week and nearly 20% over the past month. The ORTEX short score sits at 71, placing LQDA in the bottom 11th percentile for short score rank across the market. That is a genuinely elevated reading. Yet the borrow market contradicts the bear narrative: availability has eased to 325%, meaning around three shares remain available for every one already lent out. That is actually looser than a week ago, when availability was around 308%. Cost to borrow has also collapsed, falling 48% week-on-week to just 0.29%. Shorts are building, but they are not paying much for the privilege, and there is no squeeze pressure in the lending market right now.
Options traders are positioned the other way. The put/call ratio is running well below its recent average at 0.32, against a 20-day mean of 0.38, a z-score of minus 1.2. Call open interest dominates by a wide margin, and the PCR is closer to its 52-week low of 0.18 than to its high of 0.75. The options market is expressing confidence in further upside, even as short sellers keep adding.
The analyst community turned markedly more constructive after August earnings, though the data is now around seven weeks old. Following the August 12 print, Wells Fargo raised its target from $62 to $108 (maintaining Overweight) and Needham moved from $70 to $110 (Buy). B of A maintained Neutral but lifted its target from $79 to $92. LifeSci Capital was the outlier, downgrading to Market Perform and setting a $90 target. The consensus mean price target is $107.75, implying roughly 52% upside from the current price. That gap reflects genuine bull/bear disagreement rather than uniform conviction. Bulls point to YUTREPIA's growing inhaled treprostinil market share and promising Phase 3 data for the L606 formulation. Bears see an 11% sequential sales decline, limited product differentiation, and unresolved patent litigation as material drags. EPS momentum over 30 and 90 days ranks in the 85th and 78th percentiles respectively, which is strong, though the EV/EBITDA multiple has drifted lower by about 0.9 turns over the past month, a mild de-rating even as the stock has held up.
The ownership picture adds another layer. BlackRock filed a 13G in July disclosing an 11.9% stake and now appears to hold closer to 12.1% based on more recent data. Farallon Capital filed a 13G in August at 9.4%, and Joshua Dapice holds 9.9%. None of these are 13D activist filers: as the ORTEX disclosure note cautions, these stakes are as-last-disclosed around the 5% threshold and holders can exit without a further filing. On the insider side, the recent activity is largely option exercise-and-sell mechanics. Director Raman Singh sold around $1.18 million in open-market sales across September 11 and 14 against option exercises at $9.31, with no 10b5-1 plan declared. The Chief Business Officer executed larger planned sales of roughly $5.1 million combined on August 21, but those were under a 10b5-1 plan. Net insider flow over 90 days runs at minus $48.8 million, a figure dominated by exercise-and-sell activity rather than discretionary selling.
Retail attention has been running hot: Wikipedia views and ORTEX page traffic combined to a z-score of 4.5 above the 90-day norm as of 27 September, which is elevated even for a name that has more than doubled year-to-date. The next earnings date is 5 November, 36 days away. After the August print the stock fell 18% on the day and a further 14% over the following week, so how the Q3 YUTREPIA sales trajectory reads relative to the bear case will be the clearest test of whether the current short build-up proves well-timed or exposed.
