Firefly Aerospace enters the final day of the quarter with short sellers quietly pressing their bets, the stock down 5% on Tuesday alone while the broader commercial space sector fell sharply.
The positioning story has been building steadily through September. Short interest climbed to 7.4% of the free float, up roughly 3.8% on the week and 7.4% on the month, putting it at its highest reading since the history in this snapshot begins. That is a meaningful level for a recently listed aerospace name and the direction of travel has been consistent: shorts added shares in four of the five sessions this week. The ORTEX short score reinforces the picture, rising from 62.7 on September 18 to 66.8 by Tuesday, a move of more than four points in just eight trading days. The borrow market, however, is not flashing stress. Cost to borrow has eased fractionally to 0.46% annually, about as cheap as stock lending gets. Availability sits near 81%, meaning there is ample room for new short positions to be established without squeezing existing ones. The 52-week availability low is below 1%, so the current setup is far from a squeeze-risk environment. Shorts are building, but they are doing so in comfort.
Options positioning has picked up a degree of defensiveness, though not at extreme levels. The put/call ratio closed Tuesday at 0.399, running above its 20-day average of 0.37 by about 1.6 standard deviations, the firmest defensive lean of the past month. The 52-week high for the ratio is 0.57, so there is plenty of room further into hedging territory if sentiment deteriorates. Combined with the short interest trend, the picture is one of gradual caution rather than outright alarm.
The analyst community is broadly constructive but has been pulling in its targets. Following the August 11 earnings report, Roth Capital and B. Riley Securities both maintained Buy ratings while cutting targets from $60 to $45 and $50 respectively. Cantor Fitzgerald reiterated Overweight with a $35 target. Wells Fargo initiated in late July at Equal-Weight with a $25 target. The mean target across coverage comes to $41.60, implying more than 80% upside from the $22.86 close, a gap that would normally look compelling. But the divergence between that target and the current price is wide enough to warrant caution in how much weight to give to any single estimate. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley both rate the stock Neutral to Equal-Weight, anchoring the more cautious end of the spectrum. The bull case centres on Firefly's positioning in commercial launch and in-space infrastructure, with a growing European and Asia-Pacific presence. The bear case points to the 29% decline in launch revenue last quarter, ongoing operating losses, and the execution risk of scaling in a competitive market where gross margins are already under pressure from revenue-mix shifts toward spacecraft.
The institutional register carries its own points of interest. AE Industrial Partners holds 30.3% of the company, a stake last filed under a Schedule 13G/A in August, down from 36.9% at the prior filing. Astera Institute trimmed from 8.9% to 6.9% across the same period. Both are passive-style disclosures, not activist 13D filings, so neither carries a governance-change signal. BlackRock and State Street both added materially to their positions through August, each roughly doubling their reported holdings, which adds a degree of institutional depth to the register. On the insider side, the September 16 cluster of Form F transactions, tax withholding on vesting shares, is compensation mechanics rather than discretionary selling. The CEO and CFO also exercised options at sub-$2.50 prices in mid-to-late September, adding shares rather than reducing them, though at notional values too small to carry much conviction signal.
On the peer front, Tuesday's tape showed the whole sector under pressure. RKLB fell 3.4% on the day and 3.2% on the week. RDW dropped 4.2% on Tuesday and is down nearly 9% across the five sessions. SIDU and MNTS fell more than 8% each in the session, with VOYG off 18% on the week. Firefly's 2% weekly decline looks restrained by comparison, though the 5% Tuesday drop aligned it more closely with the sector's direction of travel into quarter-end.
The next scheduled catalyst is earnings on November 12. The most recent comparable print, August 11, produced a 3% one-day gain. The quarter before that delivered a 14.8% one-day move and a 26.7% five-day move, the latter the strongest reaction on record in this dataset. With short interest growing, the short score ticking up, and availability still ample, what to watch between now and November is whether that short interest continues to build or reverses, and whether the sector-wide selling pressure of quarter-end spills into October or stabilises.
