lululemon athletica is closing out September with short sellers at their most committed in years, the stock down nearly 20% over the past month, and the Street still debating how low the floor is.
Short interest has now reached 13.8% of free float, a level that two previous notes this week have flagged and that continues to drift higher. The latest ORTEX daily estimate puts shares short at 15.7 million, up 9.6% on the week and 55% above where they stood at the start of August. The ORTEX short score has risen for nine consecutive sessions to 61.7, ranking LULU in the bottom decile of the entire stock universe on bearish conviction. That said, the lending market is not flashing distress. Cost to borrow remains near zero at 0.43%, and availability is 280%, meaning roughly three shares remain available for every one already borrowed. Shorts are not crowding into a tight borrow; they are adding deliberately, drawn by the fundamental case rather than forced into covering. The put/call ratio at 0.67 is marginally below its 20-day average of 0.69, sitting towards the bullish end of its 52-week range. Options traders have not yet followed the short sellers into a more defensive posture, and that divergence remains the most interesting tension in the stock.
The analyst community turned sharply more cautious after the September 3 earnings print. Most major firms lowered targets, with Goldman Sachs cutting to $95 from $111 and Barclays moving to $95 from $113, both maintaining neutral-equivalent ratings. Citi trimmed to $117 from $130 on a Neutral. BMO initiated coverage with an Underperform and a $70 target, one of the most negative calls on the board. BNP Paribas holds the most aggressive bear case with a $44 target. The mean target now sits at $104.91 against a current price of $96.87, implying modest nominal upside, but a $44-to-$117 range among active analysts tells you there is genuine disagreement about where earnings bottom. The stock trades at roughly 11 times trailing earnings and under two times book, multiples that have been compressing for weeks. EV/EBITDA is 5.7 times. On factor scores, EPS momentum over 30 and 90 days ranks in the bottom decile, and the analyst recommendation diffusion score sits at 5 out of 100, meaning the consensus direction is firmly negative.
The bull and bear cases are sharply drawn. Bulls point to a still-premium brand, an 800-plus store network across roughly two dozen markets, inventory ending the quarter down 7% in units, and management-guided cost savings cushioning gross margins at 54.9%. The full-year store opening plan has been pulled back to 35 locations, signalling discipline on capital. Bears note that Q2 Americas comparable sales fell 12% in constant currency, China came in well below expectations with comps down 8%, and the full-year revenue outlook has been cut to a decline of 5% to 7%. EPS guidance of $9.48 to $9.73 represents a material step down, and the CEO transition adds execution uncertainty at exactly the moment the brand needs to rebuild traffic and product resonance.
On the ownership register, Dennis J. Wilson, the company's founder, filed a Schedule 13D amendment as recently as September 3, disclosing an 8.6% stake. The 13D classification signals active intent rather than a passive holding, and Wilson remains one of the largest shareholders alongside BlackRock at 8.0% and Vanguard Capital Management at 6.7%. As always with 13D filings, the position reflects the as-disclosed level around the 5% threshold, and holdings can move without a further filing. FMR cut its stake from 10.4% to 3.6% as of October 2025, a substantial reduction that was not matched by other large institutional holders at their last reporting dates.
Alt data adds one piece of colour worth noting. ORTEX's buyback dataset, sourced from SEC EDGAR XBRL filings, shows Q1 2026 was the largest quarter for share repurchases in six years, with 1.5 million shares bought back, up 67% on the same quarter a year earlier. Wikipedia page views spiked to a z-score of 4.7 around September 8, a measure of retail attention that tracks its own 90-day history. Neither dataset has a measured lead to the company's reported financials, so neither speaks to the earnings trajectory, but the buyback pace is a concrete data point on management's capital allocation choices during a difficult trading period.
The next earnings event is December 10. Between now and then, the key questions are whether the pace of short-selling acceleration slows or whether 15% of float becomes the new baseline, and whether options traders eventually reprice toward the caution that short sellers are already pricing in.
