ON Semiconductor has added 9.5% in a week and closed Thursday at $80.08, its best level since before the September earnings drop, with Wells Fargo raising its target this morning and options positioning near the most bullish of the past year.
The analyst story has turned decisively more constructive since the prior note flagged a wave of target cuts. Wells Fargo's Joe Quatrochi raised his price target to $100 from $85 this morning while keeping an Overweight rating, a direct reversal of the cut he filed on September 17. Needham reiterated its Buy and $116 target on the same day. Seaport Global initiated coverage at Buy with a $100 target on September 23. The earlier cuts from Truist, Stifel and Mizuho are now framed differently by the price action: targets came down to the $75 to $95 range, but the stock has already moved back through the upper end of that band. The consensus mean target across the Street is $104, implying roughly 30% further upside from current levels. The analyst_rec_diff factor score ranks in the 92nd percentile, meaning ON's analyst consensus is more constructive than almost all of its semiconductor peers by this measure.
Options positioning reinforces that shift. The put/call ratio has dropped to 0.36, near its 52-week low of 0.35, and sits about half a standard deviation below its 20-day average. That is the mirror image of the extreme defensiveness documented before the September 16 print, when the PCR spiked more than four standard deviations above its mean. Traders who loaded up on downside protection ahead of results have largely unwound those hedges, and the balance has swung toward calls. The borrow market adds little to the short story: availability is vast, with roughly 42 shares available for every one currently lent out, and borrowing costs are just 0.46%, close to a one-month low. There is no meaningful squeeze pressure in the lending pool.
Short interest, at 7.4% of the free float, is worth noting but not alarming. The position has crept up around 3.4% over the past month in share terms, consistent with shorts rebuilding after the August lows. But the ORTEX short score of 43.6 sits in the 40th percentile, not a crowded or extreme reading, and days-to-cover at around three days leaves no structural overhang. The short base looks more like residual scepticism than a high-conviction crowded trade. Retail attention, measured by Wikipedia page views relative to the prior 90 days, is running elevated with a z-score of 1.35, pointing to above-average interest around the recovery move.
The bull case centres on ON's vertically integrated power-and-sensing platform, its exposure to vehicle electrification and ADAS, and a claimed $47 billion addressable opportunity in AI data centres. Management has framed the Embedded Power Platform as capable of 3x to 5x higher power density at no incremental capital cost on its existing 12-inch process. Bears counter that the AI data centre revenue would need to grow at above 50% compounded annually from roughly $500 million today to exceed $2.5 billion by 2030, a pace that leaves little room for execution error, and that the broader bull thesis requires multiple favourable factors arriving simultaneously. Valuation has re-rated alongside the price: the PE multiple has expanded around 1.4 points over the past 30 days to just above 19x, and EV/EBITDA has moved similarly, to nearly 13x. Neither is stretched for a growth semiconductor name, but both are moving in one direction.
Among peers, SYNA gained 9.6% on the week and MCHP added 5.1%, suggesting a broad semiconductor recovery has lifted the sector rather than ON outrunning the group on company-specific news alone. TXN and NXPI rose a more modest 3.9% to 4% over the same period. The next earnings event is November 2, which gives the market roughly four weeks to decide whether the analyst upgrades and options shift reflect a durable re-rating or simply a relief rally finding its ceiling.
