Wall Street analysts are pulling in opposite directions on financial stocks this week. The divergence is sharp and worth watching.
MS was upgraded by consensus analysts. Its average target price moved up to $231.86 from $226.48. Short interest sits at just 1.5% of free float — bears have little presence here.
STT saw the biggest target price jump in the batch. The average target rose to $196.89 from $185.04 — a nearly $12 move. State Street's $50 billion market cap and minimal short interest of 1.8% suggest the market broadly agrees.
On the other side, PRU was downgraded. Prudential dropped from one buy recommendation to zero in the latest consensus shift. The insurer trades at a $41 billion market cap with short interest at 3.4% of free float.
FOXA also took a downgrade. Fox Corp carries notably higher short interest at 21.1% of free float — one of the more heavily shorted names in the media space. Bears were already positioned ahead of this cut.
NFLX analysts trimmed targets slightly, from $98.77 to $98.16 on average. The move is modest but reflects continued caution on valuation after a strong run.
UAL also saw target cuts from analysts following recent earnings. The airline sector faces ongoing margin pressure heading into the back half of 2026.
