Ameris Bancorp enters its July 30 Q2 print with options traders markedly more defensive than they have been all year, compounding a week of analyst pressure that has pushed the stock down 5.3% to $86.04.
The clearest shift heading into the report is in the options market. The put/call ratio has jumped to 0.33, almost 1.8 standard deviations above its 20-day average of 0.17 and close to its 52-week high of 0.36. That is a dramatic change from June, when the ratio was running as low as 0.05 — call buyers dominated through most of the summer rally. The pivot toward puts has arrived precisely as the stock has rolled over, down 5.5% over the past month.
Since the prior ORTEX preview published on July 24, the analyst picture has shifted further. Piper Sandler, already at Neutral after downgrading on July 13, lowered its target to $92 from $96 on July 27. DA Davidson held its Buy rating and nudged its target up to $100 from $98 on the same day — leaving the Street visibly split. The consensus mean target now sits near $94, implying around 9% upside from current levels, but that gap has been shrinking as the stock has drifted lower. Bulls lean on Ameris's franchise depth across Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina, where regional consolidation continues to reward scale players. Bears counter that commercial real estate concentration and margin pressure in the current rate environment leave little room for a positive surprise on net interest income.
Short interest tells a less charged story. At roughly 4% of the free float — down about 4% on the week — there is no meaningful short accumulation into the print. Borrow availability is exceptionally loose at 1,412%, and the cost to borrow has eased to around 0.44%, off about 10% on the week. The lending market carries none of the squeeze pressure that might amplify a move in either direction.
The Q2 print will therefore test whether Ameris can deliver enough on loan growth and margin to quiet the two analysts who have stepped back since July 1, and whether the bank's Southeast franchise warrants a re-rating back toward the mid-$90s target range that the bulls still defend.
