T1 Energy reported this morning with its lending market at the most extreme readings in its history. Three separate signals converged this week — short interest, borrow availability, and cost to borrow — all pointing the same direction.
Availability stood at 4.3% as of August 5. That is the lowest reading in 52 weeks. For every share still available to lend, more than twenty are already out on loan.
The collapse was rapid. Ten days ago, availability sat near 65%. It fell through 8% by July 31, then through 6% by August 4, and has continued compressing. The pace of that move — a 93% week-on-week tightening — is the standout data point in this snapshot.
Short interest itself is elevated at 25.5% of the free float, up roughly 9% over the past week. That puts the ORTEX short score at 67.6, with a utilization rank in the 1st percentile — meaning the borrow market is tighter than almost any comparable name tracked by ORTEX.
Cost to borrow rose 50% in the past week to 0.86%. That sounds dramatic. In context, it is not — 0.86% remains a low absolute rate for a stock whose lending pool is nearly exhausted.
The disconnect is worth flagging. Borrow availability this tight typically precedes a sharper cost-to-borrow move. It has not arrived yet. Whether that reflects new shares entering the lending pool or simply a lag in pricing will become clearer in coming days.
Analysts maintain a broadly positive view. Needham holds a Buy but trimmed its target to $7 from $8 last week. Northland Capital Markets initiated at Outperform with a $16 target in June. The consensus mean sits at $9.71 — well above the current $5.55 close.
The bull case centres on T1 Energy's domestic U.S. solar supply chain and a target of $375–450M in adjusted EBITDA by 2027. The bear case is more immediate: a roughly $225M financing gap for Phase 1 expansion, with financial close originally targeted for April 2026.
BlackRock added over 10 million shares in its most recent filing. State Street added more than 9 million. Trina Solar, however, trimmed 22.5 million shares — the largest disclosed holder change in the table.
