BJ's Wholesale Club reports Thursday with short sellers rebuilding positions and options traders turning more defensive — two signals that converge heading into a quarter the market already knows was strong.
Short interest has climbed about 10% over the past week to 7% of the free float, reversing a mid-July pullback and marking the highest level in the trailing 30-day window. That said, the lending market offers no amplification: availability is extremely loose at roughly 1,500% — meaning there are roughly fifteen shares available to borrow for every one currently lent out — and borrowing cost is negligible at 0.39%. The short build is a directional bet, not a squeeze dynamic. Options traders are leaning the same way. The put/call ratio jumped to 0.83 on Friday, almost two standard deviations above its 20-day average of 0.74 and the highest defensive reading since late July. The stock slipped 3.2% on the week to $93.41, trailing peers: COST gained 1.4% and WMT added 3.1% over the same span, leaving BJ the clear laggard in its closest peer group.
The bull and bear cases are reasonably well-defined. Bulls point to a warehouse club model that produces recurring membership fee income, a private-label portfolio in Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen, and an ongoing club-count expansion story that gives BJ a long runway well outside its Northeast heartland. Gordon Haskett upgraded the stock to Buy in late July, setting a $115 target, and Evercore lifted its target to $100 in early August — both moves made after the stock had already pulled back, suggesting at least some analysts see value at current levels. The consensus mean target sits at $102.90, roughly 10% above the last close. Bears counter that the quarter already printed strong — a recent ORTEX note flagged better-than-expected Q2 results — and the real question is whether August guidance can justify a stock trading at nearly 20x earnings with comp-store momentum that has looked uneven. EV/EBITDA has compressed modestly over the past month, and the forward earnings revision profile ranks only in the 41st percentile on 90-day momentum, limiting the case for multiple expansion.
The insider pattern adds a layer of caution. CEO Robert Eddy has sold shares in each of the past four months — including a $7.3 million transaction on July 29, the largest single sale in the trailing 90-day window — bringing net insider selling to roughly $11 million over that period. COO Scott Schmadeke sold a further $1.5 million in June. Consistent executive selling at prices between $89 and $100 does not invalidate the bull case, but it narrows the margin of comfort for investors counting on management conviction to anchor the stock through a period where guidance will matter more than the backward-looking beat.
Thursday's print is therefore less about Q2 itself and more about whether BJ can deliver a full-year framework — membership growth, margin trajectory, and new club economics — that shifts the tone after three consecutive earnings days that each ended with the stock down between 3% and 10%.
