Rezolve AI enters the final stretch before its September 1 earnings report with short sellers pulling back from extreme positions — yet the borrow market and options desk both suggest the underlying tension hasn't resolved.
The short-selling story here has genuinely shifted over the past two weeks. Short interest peaked near 43 million shares in late July and has unwound to roughly 34.6 million — an 11.5% decline — bringing the figure to 11.5% of the free float, down from highs above 14%. That retreat is meaningful, but the broader picture remains heavily shorted. FINRA's official mid-July settlement count had short interest at 38.9 million shares with nearly five days to cover, underscoring that even as fast-money shorts have trimmed, the structural overhang is still substantial. The most dramatic move, though, has been in borrow costs: cost to borrow hit a staggering 158% annualised on August 3 at the height of the squeeze, then collapsed to 16.5% by August 20 — a fall of nearly 32% on the week alone. Availability has loosened slightly from its tightest point near 20% but remains at just 27.7%, meaning only one share is available to borrow for every three already lent out. That's a tight market by any standard. The ORTEX short score, which ranks the stock in the 2nd percentile of free float on loan, has also been drifting lower — from 81.8 on August 7 to 76.6 on August 20 — confirming that shorts are unwinding, not adding.
Options positioning is sending a more cautious signal. The put/call ratio has climbed to 0.33, its highest reading of the past 52 weeks, and sits nearly two standard deviations above the 20-day average of 0.27. That's not outright bearish, but for a stock where calls have consistently dominated options flow, the sudden uptick in put demand is worth flagging. The drift started mid-August and has accelerated into this week, coinciding with the stock's 7.9% slide on the week to $2.46.
The fundamental case remains contested, and the numbers do little to resolve it. The growth pillar of Rezolve's ORTEX composite score remains exceptional — a 90th-percentile reading — built on management's projection of $350 million in 2026 revenues, roughly double what the Street models. But quality and value scores tell a starkly different story, with deeply negative return on assets and an EV/EBITDA multiple so distorted by losses as to be unmeasurable in any conventional sense. There are no usable analyst price targets in the data that can be reconciled with the current $2.46 price, so the Street case rests almost entirely on the bull/bear narrative: bulls point to AI-driven partnerships and direct sales ramp; bears flag persistent dilution, competitive pressure, and the absence of any near-term path to profitability. Among correlated peers, PLTR gained 3.4% on the day and 3.4% on the week, SOUN added 5% on the day, and AISP climbed nearly 10% on the week — all moving higher while RZLV gave ground, reinforcing the underperformance pattern flagged in recent peer notes.
Ownership data adds a layer of complexity. The top two holders — Dblp Sea Cow Limited and Igor Lychagov — together control over 20% of shares, with Alejandro Gonzalez adding 7.25 million shares as recently as July 14. The concentrated ownership structure means a relatively small free float is being heavily shorted, amplifying moves in both directions. Insider buy activity — including CEO Daniel Wagner's $3.25 million purchase at $4.00 in April — predates the current $2.46 level, leaving those insiders sitting on meaningful paper losses. The most recent insider trade on record, a $266k director purchase in May at $2.78, is now modestly underwater as well.
Looking at the four most recent earnings prints, the stock has been volatile but not consistently directional: a 5% gain on April 15, a 3.2% gain on June 26, a 0.7% gain on August 6, and a slight loss on April 24 — with five-day reactions ranging from -2.2% to +9.9%. The next report on September 1 arrives with short interest still elevated, borrow availability tight, options positioning at a 52-week defensive extreme, and a peer group moving higher around it — making the gap between Rezolve's actual revenue trajectory and its $350 million guidance the number that will do the most work.
