VEEV heads into its August 26 earnings release with options traders at their most bullish in over a year — a sharp pivot from the cautious stance that defined positioning just weeks ago.
The options signal is the sharpest thing in the setup right now. The put/call ratio collapsed to 0.46 on August 21 — nearly three standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.57, and close to the lowest reading of the past 52 weeks. That means calls are dominating flow at an unusual extreme, reflecting a level of bullish conviction that stands out even against VEEV's generally call-heavy options market. The move coincides with a 31% rally over the past month to $247.90, though the stock dipped 1% in the most recent session, a reminder that the run has been steep.
Short sellers are retreating, not pressing. Short interest has fallen 14% over the past week to 3.9% of the free float — the lowest level in the 30-day window tracked here. Borrow conditions confirm bears are not building pressure: cost to borrow is a negligible 0.42%, down 27% over the past month, and availability is extremely loose at over 1,000%, meaning the lending pool is nearly untapped. That combination rules out any meaningful squeeze dynamic, but it also reflects a market where short sellers see diminishing reason to fight the tape.
The analyst community has moved decisively in the same direction. In the days since the previous earnings print, multiple firms lifted their targets in a cluster: Oppenheimer raised to $300 from $225, while Guggenheim and Barclays both moved to the $275 range. The consensus mean is $254, roughly in line with where the stock trades, suggesting the recent move has absorbed most of the easy upside on Street models. Goldman Sachs remains a notable holdout with a Sell rating and a $165 target — a stark outlier that anchors the bear case. That case centres on customer concentration among the top 20 pharma clients, pricing pressure from regulatory headwinds, and the longer-term risk that agentic AI disrupts VEEV's seat-based SaaS model. Bulls counter with the company's dominant cloud franchise in life sciences, a recently launched agentic platform called Veeva Falcon, and forward earnings momentum that ranks in the 67th percentile on year-over-year EPS growth expectations. The valuation is not cheap — the trailing P/E has expanded by roughly five turns over the past 30 days to around 25x — but the bull case leans on durable recurring revenue rather than a re-rating story.
The two most recent earnings reactions offer a cautionary note on positioning this bullish: the stock fell roughly 2% the day after the June 3 print, then dropped a further 10% over the following five days. The print on Wednesday will test whether the near-unanimous analyst optimism and extreme call positioning are supported by results that justify the 31% run since late July.
