Iovance Biotherapeutics gave back 7.8% on Friday to close at $8.29, yet still logged an 18.8% gain on the week — and the most notable shift in the data this week is not in the short book but in options, where defensive positioning just hit its most extreme reading of the past year.
The options signal deserves the lead this week. The put/call ratio jumped to 0.49 on Friday — the highest of the past 52 weeks and more than three standard deviations above its 20-day mean of 0.33. For context, the PCR had been running in a narrow band between 0.28 and 0.36 for most of the past month. Friday's reading is a clean break from that range. It does not necessarily reflect broad bearish conviction — the stock had just posted a massive weekly gain — but it does indicate a meaningful rush to buy downside protection at the highs. The timing, coming the same day the stock dropped 7.8% from what had been a fresh 52-week high at $8.99, gives the print added weight.
The short book continues its slow but steady retreat, though bears have not broken. Short interest edged down a further 3.7% on the week to 22.3% of the free float — roughly 88.6 million shares — extending a decline that began from a peak above 104 million in mid-July. That is genuine covering, but the pace remains modest relative to a stock that has more than doubled in a month. The borrow market reinforces the same read: availability has continued to loosen, now at 155.7% — almost double what it was in mid-July when the stock was much lower and availability was near 60%. Cost to borrow at 0.56% is barely changed. There is no mechanical squeeze pressure here. Bears are trimming on their own terms, not being forced out by the lending market.
What's changed on the Street this week is the persistence of the upgrades even as the stock retreats. UBS lifted its target to $7 — a level the stock was already above — while holding Neutral. That gap between a new target and the current price captures the broader analyst dynamic precisely: most of the Street has been chasing the rally rather than leading it. Mizuho holds at $11, Barclays at $13, Citizens at $8. The consensus mean of $9.67 implies a thin premium to Friday's close. Bulls remain anchored to the FDA-approved TIL therapy commercial trajectory and the August 6 earnings print — which sent the stock up 46% in a single session — as proof the Amtagvi launch is gaining traction. Bears retain their structural arguments: manufacturing costs, no clear profitability timeline, and intensifying TIL competition. The ORTEX short score at 69.9 has edged down from a recent peak of 72.6, reflecting marginal improvement in short positioning, but still ranks in the 11th percentile — deep in the universe of heavily-shorted names.
The institutional picture adds a layer of interest. BlackRock added 5.9 million shares in the most recent reporting period, bringing its stake to 8.2% of shares. State Street added 7 million to reach 5.4%. Both moves were filed as of July 31 — before the August 6 explosion — which means the two largest passive holders were building into a stock that was still near its lows. That flow has been a quiet tailwind that the weekly short-covering narrative can obscure.
The stock closed the week up 19% and down 8% in a single session. The next earnings event is not until November 6. Between now and then, the question is whether options traders who bought puts on Friday are early or simply cautious — and whether the short book finally begins to move with more urgency, or continues its measured, slow-motion retreat at 22% of the float.
