AST SpaceMobile ends the week in a state of productive tension — short sellers have now trimmed over 12 million shares from their peak position, yet the borrow market has barely thawed, leaving a 20% short float on a stock that just bounced 5.5% in a single session.
The lending market remains the defining feature. Availability has edged up to 3.7% — from the near-total freeze of 1.9–2.4% seen mid-week — but that is still only one share left for every 27 already on loan. The brief loosening that followed the August 10 earnings print (availability hit 23% on August 14) has been fully consumed and then some. The 52-week low of 0.31%, hit on July 24, remains the reference point for how much tighter this can go. Cost to borrow has crept up 21% on the week to 1.37% — still cheap in absolute terms, nowhere near the 1.58% July peak — meaning the lending market's constraint is scarcity of shares, not price. The ORTEX short score holds at 70.3, ranking in the bottom 3rd percentile of the universe, and has drifted fractionally higher every session this week.
Short interest itself tells a separate, more encouraging story for longs. Bears have now cut their position to 56.2 million shares — 20.2% of free float — down from 63.5 million a month ago. The monthly decline of 12.6% is real covering, not a statistical artefact. The pace has steadied rather than accelerated: the week-on-week change is near-flat at -0.7%, suggesting the easiest covering has already happened. With 3.3 days to cover per the most recent FINRA data, there is still meaningful short fuel remaining if the stock finds fresh momentum, but the bulk of the forced-covering impulse from the earnings print appears to have played out.
The Street's view has settled into a predictable split since the August 11 analyst cluster. UBS trimmed its target to $78 while holding Neutral. Piper Sandler shaved to $98 but kept Overweight. Cantor Fitzgerald moved the other way, raising to $90, also Overweight. The mean target at $78.48 implies roughly 14% upside from Friday's $68.65 close — not extravagant given the risk profile, but enough for most bulls to stay involved. The EPS momentum factor scores at the 100th percentile — a reflection of accelerating estimate revisions rather than actual profitability, given the negative earnings yield. The price-to-book multiple has expanded to 14.1x, up from around 10.6x a month ago, tracking the stock's 8.4% one-month gain. The bear case centres on execution risk and regulatory timing; the bull case is government partnerships and a patent moat in direct-to-device connectivity.
Insider activity remains one-directional. On August 14, the CFO, President, COO, and Chief Accounting Officer all sold simultaneously at $70.98 — a coordinated program-sale pattern rather than a single conviction trade, but the direction is consistent with June's $147 million founder sale and earlier CFO and CTO exits. Net insider value sold in the past 90 days exceeds $172 million. None of the recent sales are high-significance individually; collectively, the direction of travel is unambiguous.
The next scheduled earnings event is November 10. Between now and then, the stock's behaviour will be shaped by whether availability continues its tentative recovery or seizes again toward the July 24 floor — and whether the covering trend, which has removed nearly 20% of peak short interest over two months, accelerates or stalls at the current 20% of float level.
