Why this matters: Options positioning in CRH has swung sharply bearish this week. That shift runs against the grain of a lending market now at its most relaxed in months — a rare divergence worth watching.
CRH's put-call ratio hit 0.99 on August 26. That is the highest reading since late July. More telling is the z-score: 2.69 standard deviations above the 20-day mean of 0.88. Options traders are pricing in considerably more downside protection than usual.
The timing is striking. Short sellers have been heading for the exits. SI % of FF fell 11% in a single session to 1.91% on August 25. The one-month decline is 20%. Shorts are not building a new case against CRH — they are covering.
The borrow market confirms the retreat. Availability has surged to the platform ceiling — effectively no constraint on new shorts entering if they chose to. Cost to borrow has collapsed 63% week-on-week to 0.40%, close to multi-month lows.
A CTB of 0.40% is trivially cheap to borrow. Availability at these extreme levels means the short-selling community has genuine room to re-establish positions if conviction returned. So far, it has not.
DA Davidson initiated coverage on August 25 with a Buy and a $137 target — the stock trades near $97. Stephens and Truist both maintained positive ratings after July earnings, trimming targets modestly to $125 and $130 respectively. The consensus remains Buy, with a mean target of $138.
The bull case rests on CRH's North American dominance. The region generates 75% of group EBITDA. Paving revenue has compounded at 8% annually for five years. The bear case centres on FX headwinds, margin pressure, and demand uncertainty in residential and non-residential construction.
Earnings brought a modest negative reaction — down 4.7% on July 30. The stock has slipped 2.8% over the past month but gained 2.4% this week. The next print is October 30.
State Street added 3.17 million shares in the most recent reporting period. Boston Partners added 3.91 million. BlackRock added 1.76 million. That breadth of institutional accumulation at current levels suggests the selloff is attracting buyers at the large-cap level.
The ORTEX short score sits at 32, down from 34.6 two weeks ago — consistent with the easing pressure in the lending market.
What to watch: Whether the elevated put-call ratio represents genuine bearish conviction or hedging around the October earnings date. If SI starts rebuilding from its current 1.91% base while availability remains loose, the options positioning may be getting ahead of the data.
