FCNC.A enters the final week of August with options traders making their most bullish statement in over a year, even as the regional banking sector continues to drift lower around it.
The sharpest signal this week is in options. The put/call ratio has collapsed to 0.574 — nearly 1.8 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.87 — making it the lowest reading of the past year. That means call volume is dominating in a way that's historically unusual for this stock. The shift is dramatic: as recently as mid-August, the PCR was running near 1.0, implying roughly balanced hedging. The move to 0.574 in less than two weeks represents a genuine re-positioning toward upside exposure, not a gradual drift.
The lending market tells a much quieter story. Short interest has been falling for a month — down roughly 11.6% — and now stands at about 3.8% of free float. That's a real but modest short position, and there's nothing strained about the borrow market. Availability is running near 494%, meaning there are roughly five shares available to borrow for every two already lent out. Cost to borrow has ticked up 15.6% on the week to 0.61%, but that's still a historically low rate — the lending pool is loose, not squeezed. The ORTEX short score of 49.9 is mid-range and has been essentially flat for two weeks, confirming no meaningful build or unwind is underway.
Street positioning is cautiously constructive but lacks conviction. The cluster of analyst moves following last month's earnings print was universally in one direction: target prices higher. Truist lifted to $2,323, Barclays to $2,376, and JP Morgan to $2,450 — all while maintaining neutral or hold-equivalent ratings. That pattern — raising targets without upgrading — signals the Street sees fair value drifting higher but isn't ready to chase. Keefe, Bruyette & Woods went the other way in early July, downgrading to Market Perform while holding its target flat at $2,300. With the stock trading around $2,194, the consensus target of $2,343 implies modest upside of roughly 6.8%. The bull case centres on NIM recovery from the SVB acquisition and continued loan growth; the bear case flags a shrinking balance sheet, deposit pressure, and slower buybacks. On valuation, the trailing P/E runs at 11.0x and price-to-book at 1.1x — both undemanding for a bank of this scale. The EPS surprise factor score ranks in the 94th percentile, reflecting a consistent track record of beating estimates.
The earnings reaction history adds a constructive data point. The last print, on July 23, moved the stock up nearly 4% on the day and held those gains through the following week. The prior result in late July produced a smaller 0.7% one-day move but a 3% five-day drift. The pattern across both recent events has been positive. The next earnings date is October 29.
One ownership note worth flagging: the founder-linked Holding family remains the third-largest holder at 12.7% of shares, and several associated entities show no recent change in position — a signal of stable long-term stewardship rather than active reallocation. Institutional flows are broadly flat, with BlackRock adding modestly and Vanguard Portfolio Management trimming in the most recent reporting period.
With options repositioning sharply toward calls, short positions unwinding quietly, and a peer group — including QCRH, UBSI, and CFG — all closing the week in the red, the October 29 print will determine whether the unusual bullishness in the options market was well-timed or premature.
