DNP heads into the final day of September with its short score declining steadily and borrow conditions loosening, a combination that paints a less hostile picture for the Warsaw-listed grocer than the data suggested two weeks ago.
The clearest shift is in short positioning. The ORTEX short score has fallen from 74.5 on September 16 to 70.5 by September 29, a drop of four points in less than two weeks. That directional move matters because the score aggregates SI, borrow costs, availability and utilisation into a single read: when all four components ease together, it signals that the pressure from the short side is genuinely dissipating rather than just pausing. Short interest remains at roughly 10% of free float, which is a meaningful level for any stock, but the trend is running against the bears. Borrow costs have fallen nearly 10% on the week to 0.78%, and availability has widened to around 202% of SI, up from a 52-week trough of 150% on September 11. More shares to borrow relative to the size of the short book is a signal of reduced crowding. The borrow market has gone from its tightest point of the year to back in comfortable territory in less than three weeks.
Analyst sentiment is muted rather than negative. The consensus sits at hold across five analysts, with a mean price target of PLN 35.87, almost exactly where the stock closed at PLN 35.41 on September 29. That near-zero implied upside explains why nobody is driving conviction bets in either direction. The forward earnings yield sits at roughly 5.4% and the P/E multiple at 18.5x, both drifting only modestly over 30 days. Two factor scores stand out: the analyst recommendation differential ranks in the 96th percentile, which captures how far below consensus the stock's current rating sits, and the 12-month forward EPS growth estimate ranks at the 100th percentile, suggesting the Street's underlying earnings model for Dino is more constructive than the hold rating implies. The short score rank, at just the 8th percentile, confirms that this is one of the more shorted names in its peer group by ORTEX ranking.
Ownership is stable at the top. Founder Tomasz Biernacki holds 51.2% of shares and has not moved. BlackRock added roughly 1.1 million shares through August, bringing its stake to 2.1%. Capital Research added about 979,000 shares over the same period. Baillie Gifford lifted its position by 2.2 million shares to 5.5 million. On the other side, Norges Bank Investment Management trimmed by 5.7 million shares as of June 30. The institutional picture is therefore one of selective accumulation by long-only managers at a time when the short-score peak appears to be in.
Post-earnings reactions add useful context. The two most recent prints, both tied to the August 20 results, produced a 7% one-day gain and a 9% five-day move. The May 14 result was sharper: a 12.6% single-day jump and 10.8% over the following five days. With the next scheduled earnings on November 5, the stock has roughly five weeks before another potential re-rating event.
What to watch heading into November is whether the short score continues its descent toward the mid-60s, and whether availability holds above 200%, because a reversal in either metric, particularly if accompanied by renewed cost-to-borrow pressure, would suggest fresh short conviction rebuilding ahead of the print.
