Short sellers made decisive moves in the week to October 5. The action was concentrated in energy, healthcare and retail, with a dramatic covering trade also grabbing attention.
MMED (MiniMed Group) remained the most shorted liquid US name, with SI % of FF climbing to 80.0%, up 9.5 percentage points in a week. Shares to borrow are almost exhausted, with availability at just 0.4%. That combination of extreme short interest and vanishing supply is a classic squeeze setup.
TLN (Talen Energy) drew fresh attention from bears. SI % FF jumped from 6.4% to 11.5% in seven days. Nuclear power stocks have surged on AI-driven electricity demand, and Talen has been a prime beneficiary. Bears appear to be fading that trade.
CHWY (Chewy) also saw shorts add positions. SI % FF rose 4.2 points to 69.8%. The pet retailer has shed 12% in three months, yet short sellers keep pressing.
NKT (NKT A/S), the Danish power cable maker, was the biggest mover globally. SI % FF leapt from 2.4% to 13.2% over the week. European petrol car registrations fell to a record low of 5,821 units in September 2026, per ORTEX alt data, and cable infrastructure names are caught in the crossfire of shifting EV sentiment.
On the other side, INPST (InPost) saw shorts cover aggressively. SI % FF dropped from 33.2% to just 1.1% in a week, one of the sharpest short-covering moves in the dataset.
WOLF (Wolfspeed) stayed at 81.2% SI % FF with zero availability. HTZ (Hertz) held at 70.4%. These are structurally elevated positions with little change.
NVDA and TSLA remain lightly shorted at 1.3% and 2.4% respectively. Bears have not returned to the megacaps in any meaningful size.
