Japan's machine tool orders data, published by the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association, delivered the week's sharpest reading. Foreign orders hit JPY 146,350m in August, up 66% on August last year. Orders by country and region rose 65% over the same period. Machine tool orders are a direct measure of global manufacturers' willingness to commit to new equipment. A 66% year-on-year jump is not a marginal improvement. It puts August 2026 among the strongest months this cycle for a series that tends to move well before factory output follows.
Spain's industrial production index adds to that picture. The index reached 103.8 in August, the largest August reading in 15 years, according to Spain's statistics office. Two data points from different continents pointing the same direction strengthen the case that industrial capital spending is running hot, at least in certain pockets.
Away from the factory floor, consumer-facing data is more mixed. Singapore's tourism authority reported 435,442 visitor arrivals from China in August, the highest reading since the series began in 2008. Arrivals from India, by contrast, have fallen for three consecutive months through the same month.
Hong Kong's public transport data cuts the other way. Passenger journeys totalled 349m in July, the smallest July in three years, according to Hong Kong's transport statistics. Whether that reflects a structural shift in travel patterns or a temporary dip, the July figure sits at a multi-year low.
European car markets add another cooling note. New petrol car registrations across Europe hit a record low for September since the series began in 2016, falling to 5,821 vehicles, below the previous September low of 6,011. New diesel registrations have fallen for three consecutive months through September.
Three company-specific readings from ORTEX's alternative data layer are worth flagging. Nuclear output data for SO (Southern Company) shows reactor output 10.0 standard deviations below its own history as of 9 September. Wikipedia views for SWDR stand 10.0 standard deviations above the stock's own history as of 23 September, a striking spike in retail attention tracked by the Wikipedia views dataset. For ABBV (AbbVie), drug trial completion date slippage sits 2.1 standard deviations below its own history as of 22 September, suggesting trials are running ahead of their scheduled completion dates relative to the norm.
