Abbott Laboratories arrives at its October 14 Q3 print having shed 9.4% over the past month, with the Street firmly bullish and the market sending more ambiguous signals.
Barclays initiated coverage this week with an Overweight rating and a $120 target, adding to what is already a crowded bull camp. That note follows Rothschild's upgrade to Buy on October 2, lifting its target to $127, and a sequence of raises from TD Cowen, Wolfe Research, Citigroup, and JP Morgan that played out through August and September after the Q2 beat. The consensus sits at Buy, with an average target of $120.72 against a current price of $98.16, implying roughly 23% upside. Bears are not entirely absent: pricing pressure in Nutrition and Medical Devices, regulatory timing risk across Abbott's sprawling launch calendar, and FX exposure given that roughly 60% of sales come from outside the United States remain the standing objections. But the direction of analyst travel has been uniformly positive, and no firm has downgraded or cut a target in the window covered here.
The lending market shows no sign of meaningful short pressure. Short interest remains low at roughly 1.2% of free float, up 2.2% on the week but barely moving in absolute terms and well within the range it has occupied all year. Borrow availability is effectively unconstrained, with the pool of shares available to lend vastly exceeding what is currently borrowed. Cost to borrow has dropped sharply this week, falling from 1.48% at the start of October to 0.23% on October 6, back near its lowest levels of the past six weeks. The ORTEX short score sits at 29.7, stable and unremarkable. Nothing in the lending market suggests an aggressive build against the name into earnings.
Options positioning is equally calm. The put/call ratio of 0.61 is barely above its 20-day average of 0.61, with a z-score of just 0.17. That places current options flow close to the dead centre of its recent range, far from the 52-week high of 1.30. Options traders are not scrambling for downside protection ahead of the print, which given the stock's recent price weakness is itself a read worth noting.
The prior two earnings prints delivered outsized moves. Abbott gained 12.8% on the day and 12.9% over the following week after Q2 results in July, and rose 11.1% on the day after the Q1 report in April with a 13.1% five-day follow-through. Both prints came after the stock had pulled back into the announcement, a setup that broadly resembles the current one. The stock is down 9.4% over the past month and closed at $98.16 on October 6. The pattern is there in the data; close peers have been similarly soft this week, with SYK down 2.5% on the day and MDT off 1.0%, suggesting sector-level pressure rather than anything idiosyncratic to Abbott.
Wikipedia attention for Abbott registered a z-score of 2.05 relative to its own trailing 90 days as of September 19, a notable spike in retail interest. This is an attention signal, not a revenue indicator, but the timing ahead of a high-profile print is worth flagging.
What to watch on October 14: whether comparable sales growth holds above the 4.8% reported in Q2, and whether management's guidance range of 6.5% to 7.5% full-year comparable growth is narrowed or revised in either direction.
