GOOGL enters the final three weeks before its October 28 earnings with analysts raising price targets, the short book stable near its one-month highs, and Wikipedia attention running well above normal, a setup that reflects genuine optimism rather than complacency.
The short position has stabilised rather than accelerated. Shares short slipped fractionally over the week to 87.0 million, equivalent to 1.5% of the free float, and are now essentially flat over seven days after the sustained September build that lifted the position by roughly 21% over the past month. As documented in earlier notes, the September series contained a dislocation around the 25th; the current level is consistent with the pattern since late August. What has not changed is the borrow environment: availability remains effectively unlimited, the cost to borrow has edged up 35% over the week but at 0.30% is still negligible in absolute terms, and the 52-week peak on availability utilisation was a trivial 0.57%. The short book is real but the lending market imposes no friction on either side. Options traders are relaxed. The put/call ratio at 0.62 is just below its 20-day average of 0.63 and close to its 52-week low, half a standard deviation on the bullish side. There is no hedging surge building ahead of the print.
The Street has been uniformly constructive over the past three weeks. Wells Fargo lifted its target to $417 on October 6, maintaining Overweight. Piper Sandler raised to $400 on September 28, and Evercore ISI moved to $450 from $420 on September 17. Tigress Financial made the boldest move, taking its target to $485 from $415 in mid-September. The direction of travel is one-sided: every recent change has been an upward revision, and no firm has cut its rating. The consensus mean target of $432 represents roughly 24% above the current price of $347.68, though the stock has only gained 2.7% over the past month, so the Street is running well ahead of price. Bulls anchor their case on Google Cloud's acceleration, Search growing at roughly 17% year on year, and Gemini Enterprise adoption across the Fortune 100. Bears point to valuation risk from the $195 billion to $205 billion capital expenditure guide, softer click and CPC trends, and regulatory exposure. The PE multiple at 24x has barely moved over the month, with the 30-day change a modest contraction of 0.22 turns, and EV/EBITDA at 14.8x has actually compressed slightly over 30 days, suggesting multiple expansion is not driving the bull case at present. The EPS surprise factor score at the 88th percentile reflects a consistent history of beating estimates, though the 30-day EPS momentum score at just the 8th percentile flags that near-term revisions are not running in the company's favour right now.
Retail attention is the one alt-data signal worth noting. Wikipedia page views for Alphabet are running 2.5 standard deviations above the company's own 90-day average, the highest attention reading in recent months. None of the four alt-data datasets covering Alphabet has been measured to lead its reported financials, so this cannot be read as a forward indicator for the print. It does point to elevated public interest at a time when the antitrust and AI headlines are frequent, which may partly explain why the short book has not unwound despite the bullish analyst backdrop.
On the ownership side, the top holder register is orderly. BlackRock added roughly 19 million shares as of September 30, Vanguard Capital Management extended its position in April, and FMR added 22.7 million shares over the most recent period. No 13D activist is on the register. Sergey Brin held 5.81% as of the February 2026 disclosure; given the disclosure-driven nature of 13G filings, that stake could have changed materially without a fresh filing being required.
The last two earnings prints produced sharply contrasting reactions: a 3.1% gain the day after the July 28 result, versus an 8.5% drop following the Q2 print on July 22. The five-day window after that Q2 release settled at minus 3%, suggesting the initial move moderated. With October 28 three weeks away, the question heading in is whether the Cloud acceleration and Search growth rate can hold against a capex profile that is now the dominant story in the free cash flow line.
