VOW3 heads into its October 29 results carrying a 15% one-month loss, a hold consensus with no recent analyst moves, and registration data that adds little comfort ahead of the print.
The price tells the headline story. VOW3 closed at €68.88 on Tuesday, down 3% on the week and off 15% over the past month. That weakness is striking even by European auto standards. Close peers MBG and BMW were roughly flat on the week, and STLAM actually added 4.2%. VOLCAR B and were also lower, down 7.3% and 6.1% respectively, so some sector pressure is shared, but VOW3's month-long slide is in a league of its own among Xetra-listed names. The stock now trades at a price-to-book of 0.17, a PE below 3.3, and an EV/EBITDA of 6.5. Those multiples scream value on paper. The PE has compressed by roughly 0.5 turns over the past 30 days as the price has fallen faster than earnings estimates have moved.
The lending market does not suggest bears are particularly organised. Borrow availability is very loose, with over 10 shares available for every one currently lent out. Borrowing cost has drifted a little higher over the past month, up roughly 15%, but at 0.77% it remains firmly in the cheap-to-borrow category. There was a one-day spike to 1.19% on October 5 that quickly reversed. The ORTEX short score stands at 37, mid-range and barely moving, having held between 36 and 38 for the past two weeks. The overall picture is that the selling pressure in the shares is not being driven by a build in short positions. It looks more like long-side fatigue than a bear campaign.
The Street's view is cautious but not actively negative. The consensus is a hold, with five analysts contributing to a mean price target of €105.24. That is a wide gap to the current price, but given the absence of any recent target changes, that figure likely reflects stale assumptions and should be treated with caution rather than as a live signal. Factor scores are similarly mixed: the dividend score ranks in the 88th percentile, reflecting the historic yield support, while EPS momentum scores are near the bottom of the range at 11 to 15 percentile. Forward EPS growth expectations rank in the 71st percentile, suggesting the Street does still expect an earnings recovery, but recent estimate drift is pulling in the wrong direction.
One data point has been measured to lead VW's quarterly revenue: Austrian car registrations, tracked by Statistik Austria, have been shown to lead revenue by 18 days with a moderate fit over 62 quarters. With two of three months in for the July-to-September quarter, VW brand registrations in Austria total 17,974 vehicles, down 17% versus the prior quarter. The year-on-year comparison is not yet available for the full quarter. That reading is a factual description of where demand stood through August, not a forecast for the print. Separately, and not a measured lead, VW brand registrations in Germany through two months of the quarter totalled 174,749 units, down 9% quarter-on-quarter, and Italian registrations through all three months came in at 46,545 units, down 4% year-on-year and 29% versus the prior quarter. None of those German or Italian series have been validated as leading the revenue line, but the directional consistency across markets is worth noting as context.
One brighter data point sits in the alt data: VW's India registrations hit a record for any September in the dataset's history going back to 2017, with 8,439 vehicles registered in September 2026. India remains a small share of global volume, but the record is a genuine positive in an otherwise soft-looking quarter.
With Q3 results due on October 29, the focus over the next three weeks will be on whether the registration weakness in Austria and Germany has fed through to the revenue line, and whether management updates its guidance on restructuring costs and EV investment timelines.
