StoneCo is at the centre of one of the most charged situations in EM fintech this week, with a fresh activist filing, a 25% rally, and options positioning that has turned decisively bullish, all arriving at once.
The most newsworthy development is the Schedule 13D filed on October 7 by Gregory Boyd Penner, disclosing a 10.8% stake of around 25.2 million shares. A 13D is an activist-intent declaration, and this is the most significant ownership signal to appear on StoneCo's register in recent memory. Penner's filing is fresh, dated today, and places him among the company's largest reported holders alongside BlackRock at a disclosed 11.4% and co-founder Andre Street at 8.2%. The standard caveat applies: 13D and 13G stakes are event-driven disclosures around the 5% threshold, and positions are as last reported. Still, the arrival of a named activist at 10.8% is not a routine disclosure. It is the kind of filing that reframes the ownership story.
Options traders have picked up the bullish signal. The put/call ratio has dropped to 0.44, nearly 1.8 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.57, the lowest defensive-hedging posture the stock has seen in months and close to the 52-week low for the ratio. Call demand is clearly dominating, consistent with investors positioning for further upside after the week's move. The borrow market remains relaxed throughout. Availability is wide at roughly 398% (meaning roughly four shares are available to borrow for every one currently lent out), cost to borrow has edged up around 15% on the week to 0.47% but remains in "low" territory, and short interest at 5.5% of free float has actually eased 3% on the week and nearly 9% on the month. Short sellers have been covering, not building. The ORTEX short score of 48.8 sits just below the neutral midpoint, confirming there is no aggressive bear conviction in the lending market right now.
The Street's view is more complicated. Analyst targets cluster in the $11 to $16.50 range across recent actions, which at least lines up with the current $11.62 price. UBS maintained its Buy in August but cut the target to $13 from $15, and JP Morgan is Overweight at $16.50, also after a trim. Goldman Sachs downgraded to Neutral at $14 in late April. Jefferies initiated at Hold with a $12.60 target in July. The direction of travel in analyst targets has been consistently downward since early 2026, and that matters for context: the stock's 25% weekly rally has happened despite, not because of, analyst sentiment improving. Valuation multiples tell a different story from the analyst caution. The trailing price-to-earnings multiple is around 5x and EV/EBITDA near 3x, both extremely compressed for a company with the bull case's claimed market leadership and a five-year EBIT CAGR cited in prior notes at well above 30%. The EPS surprise factor score ranks in the 96th percentile, meaning the company has a strong track record of beating estimates, even as forward EPS momentum scores sit in the bottom quintile, reflecting sharp estimate cuts over recent quarters.
The bear case has been well-documented: credit deterioration in Brazil, margin pressure from competition, and execution risk around the shift into banking products. A director, Silvio Jose Morais, sold just over 21,000 shares in early September at $9.91, a modest transaction in dollar terms ($208,000) but worth noting alongside the CFO's open-market purchases at similar levels back in May. The CFO put around $217,000 of his own money into the stock at roughly $9.65 in mid-May, a discretionary purchase, not a grant. That cluster of insider activity around the $9.50 to $10 level now looks well-timed, with the stock having moved 20% above those levels this week.
The closest peer, PAGS (PagSeguro Digital), gained 21.8% on the week, nearly matching STNE's move, which suggests a degree of sector-wide tailwind rather than a purely StoneCo-specific rerate. PICS was up 52% on the week, though it is a lower-correlation name. The Brazil fintech trade appears to be catching a broad bid.
Earnings are next scheduled for November 13. The last print in August produced a 4.5% single-day decline and an 8.4% five-day drop. What to watch in the weeks ahead is whether Penner's 13D leads to any further disclosures of intent, whether short interest continues its downward drift as the stock holds above $11, and whether the options call-skew holds into the earnings window.
