Norfolk Southern heads into its October 22 earnings call with the Street trimming targets and options traders turning less defensive than they have been all year.
The most notable development this week is coordinated analyst target-cutting across bellwether firms. Citigroup lowered its target to $347 from $376 on October 7, keeping a Neutral rating. JP Morgan cut to $318 from $338 on October 5, also holding Neutral. Susquehanna moved to $350 from $386 on October 2. All three maintained their ratings, but the direction of travel is clearly downward ahead of the Q3 print. The consensus mean sits at $356, roughly 12% above the current price of $316.31, which offers headline upside but masks how much air has come out since the post-Q2 target-raising cycle in late July. At that point Citigroup, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo and others all lifted targets following a Q2 beat that included 11% revenue growth and adjusted EPS of $3.52 ahead of consensus. The reversal since then reflects a tougher setup for Q3.
Options positioning tells a more constructive story than the analyst activity might suggest. The put/call ratio has dropped to 1.27, roughly 1.5 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 1.44. That is the least defensive reading in months. For most of September the ratio ran above 1.60, a level consistent with heavy downside hedging. The unwinding of that hedge book into earnings could mean investors are growing more comfortable with the setup, or simply that protection bought earlier has rolled off. Either way, the current positioning is less bearish than it appeared three weeks ago, placing the PCR close to the lower end of its 52-week range of 0.78 to 2.15.
Short interest has been stable since the spike documented in last week's note. Shorts jumped from roughly 5.6 million to 7.6 million shares on a single session in late September. That position has barely moved since, holding at 3.4% of free float as of October 6. The borrow market remains exceptionally loose. Availability is at its maximum recorded level, meaning shares available to borrow dwarf shares already borrowed. Cost to borrow has risen 76% over the week to 0.50%, but in absolute terms that remains negligible for a large-cap name. The ORTEX short score is flat near 40.8, having moved from 36.2 on September 22 to just above 40 in the days after the spike. In short, the bears who repositioned last month have not added further, and squeezing them out is not a realistic scenario given the depth of the borrow pool.
The bull and bear cases for October 22 centre on volume and pricing mix. Bulls point to 2Q merchandise and intermodal volume growth of 4% year-on-year, improving energy-related chemical demand, and pricing gains from a tighter truck market. Bears note that full-year revenue growth has been thin, intermodal faces competitive pressure, and coal revenue fell in dollar terms despite a volume increase because of export pricing pressure and unfavourable mix. The stock is down 4% over the past month against a week gain of just over 1%, putting it roughly in line with close peer UNP on the week (up 0.9%) and slightly behind CSX (up 1.2%). Canadian rails CP and CNR both lost ground over the same period, suggesting the softer week for rails broadly is not unique to NSC. The PE multiple has eased from roughly 23.7 to 22.7 over the past 30 days, a modest compression that leaves the stock at a discount to where it traded after the Q2 beat. Retail attention, as measured by Wikipedia page views against NSC's own 90-day history, is running at a z-score of 2.7, one of the more elevated readings the alt data layer records, suggesting the approaching earnings date is drawing more casual attention than usual.
The October 22 earnings release is the next hard event. What to watch is whether volume trends in merchandise and intermodal held through the summer and whether pricing gains were enough to offset the coal mix headwind that weighed on Q2 comparisons.
