IBIT enters the week with a striking divergence: the price is up 7% over the past month to $48.49, yet the borrow market has swung dramatically looser, a combination that tells a clear story about where conviction sits right now.
The most notable development in the lending market is how sharply availability has expanded. Availability has blown out to 1,630%, meaning there are now roughly sixteen shares available to borrow for every one already lent out. That compares to a 52-week low of just 201%, and the move higher has been rapid, with availability nearly doubling over the past week alone. Short interest itself has drifted lower, down almost 3% on the week to around 2.7% of the free float, a level ORTEX characterises as low. Borrowing costs have followed the same direction, falling roughly 26% over the week to 0.47%, well within the cheap-to-borrow range. Taken together, the lending picture describes a market where demand for bearish positioning in IBIT has genuinely receded as the ETF has climbed.
Options positioning adds a little nuance but not much contradiction. The put/call ratio at 0.71 is essentially in line with its 20-day average of 0.71, with a z-score barely above zero. There is no sign of elevated hedging demand. The ratio has ranged between 0.40 and 0.85 over the past year, putting the current reading roughly in the middle of that band. Options traders, like the lending market, are not expressing any particular caution about the near-term setup.
The ORTEX short score has been declining steadily, dropping from around 40 in late September to 31.6 now, its lowest point in the visible history. A falling short score reflects the combination of lower short interest, looser availability, and cheaper borrow all moving in the same direction. There is no earnings event on the calendar for this ETF, so no discrete catalyst is scheduled to disrupt that trend from the company's own reporting cycle. The fund tracks Bitcoin directly, which means price action in the underlying asset is the dominant driver.
What to watch is whether Bitcoin's price can hold above recent levels and whether institutional inflows into the ETF continue, since any reversal in either would likely be the first signal that the current looseness in the borrow market begins to tighten again.
