TE Connectivity heads into its October 28 earnings with the most bullish analyst setup it has seen in months, just as short sellers reduce their exposure at a meaningful pace.
The sharpest signal this week comes from the Street. Goldman Sachs raised its target to $288 from $284 on October 6, keeping a Buy rating, and UBS followed on October 7 with a lift to $253 from $241, also at Buy. Bernstein initiated coverage at Outperform with a $243 target in late September. The consensus mean target now stands at $249.42 against a share price of $219.51, implying roughly 14% upside. The analyst recommendation divergence score ranks at the 94th percentile of the ORTEX universe, meaning the gap between buy and hold ratings is wider than almost all comparable names. The bull case centres on AI and data connectivity momentum, growing orders, and a diversified portfolio with durable margins. The bear case points to softening opportunities in data centre networking and integration costs from acquisitions. Wells Fargo remains a holdout, keeping an Equal-Weight rating with a $220 target, effectively in line with the current price.
Short positioning reinforces the constructive lean. Bears have been steadily covering. Short interest as a percentage of the free float has fallen to 2.7% from 3.3% at mid-September, a drop of roughly 6.8% on the week and 6.4% over the past month. Borrow costs have collapsed alongside it, falling 35% over the past month to just 0.26%, the lowest reading in the 30-day window. Availability is exceptionally loose at 9,486%, meaning there are roughly 95 shares available to borrow for every one currently lent out, far above the 52-week trough of 1,703%. The lending market presents no friction at all for new shorts who want in, yet they are not showing up. That is the more interesting fact: the supply of borrows is abundant, but demand for them is declining. The short score has drifted down from 35.9 in late September to 34.7 now, consistent with the gradual exit of bearish conviction.
Options positioning is neutral, neither a warning sign nor a green light. The put/call ratio sits at 0.75, barely above its 20-day average of 0.74, and less than a third of a standard deviation away from that average. The 52-week range for the PCR runs from 0.15 to 4.55, which puts the current reading near the calm end of the distribution. There is no unusual hedging activity signalling concern about the earnings print. Amphenol, TEL's closest correlated peer, gained 5.1% on the week versus TEL's 3.3%, and Itron added 1.1%, so TEL is broadly keeping pace with the group even if not leading it.
On valuation, the trailing PE has moved to 15.6, up about 1.2 points over the past month, driven entirely by the stock's 5.2% monthly gain. EV/EBITDA has actually eased slightly, down roughly 1.0 over the same period, reflecting a less stretched enterprise valuation than the equity multiple alone might suggest. The EPS momentum score ranks at the 91st percentile on a 30-day basis, signalling that forward estimate revisions have been running strongly positive. The EP (earnings yield) score at 6.4% adds a modest income argument alongside the growth story.
The last earnings print, on July 22, produced a 4.9% drop on the day before recovering to nearly flat by the end of the week, so the market has punished TEL for results before and then largely forgiven it. Wikipedia attention is running at a z-score of 1.47 relative to its own 90-day history, modestly above normal but not extreme.
With Goldman, UBS, and Bernstein all pointing north and short sellers cutting exposure, the question for the October 28 print is whether the order momentum in AI connectivity and automotive that bulls are relying on shows up clearly enough in the numbers to close the gap between $219 and $249.
