The story on ETH, the Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF, has reversed sharply from where it stood a week ago: the short-building trend flagged in the previous note has unwound, and the borrow market has swung from contested back to extremely loose.
The scale of the reversal is striking. Short interest has fallen 31% over the past week to 2.6% of the float, giving back most of the buildup that had pushed it to 3.7% at the end of September. That contraction coincides with a dramatic loosening in borrow availability. A week ago availability had compressed to around 362%. It now reads at 2,819%, meaning there are roughly 28 shares available to borrow for every one currently shorted. That is effectively unlimited supply. Cost to borrow has eased alongside, dropping 20% on the week to 0.46% and now running 45% below its level a month ago. The short score, which tracks the aggregate pressure on the stock from short-side positioning, has fallen from 51.5 on October 1 to 30.8, its lowest reading in the dataset. Every indicator in the lending market is pointing the same direction: the bearish conviction that was building into the end of September has largely dissipated.
Options positioning has edged slightly more defensive in the past few sessions, but the move is modest. The put/call ratio is at 0.33, about one standard deviation above its 20-day average of 0.29, and still well below the 52-week high of 0.41. That is a mild tilt toward caution, not a strong signal on its own. The overall options picture is consistent with a market that is watching rather than aggressively hedging.
The fund itself has been quiet on price. ETH closed at $25.66, down 0.7% on the day but essentially flat on the week, while the one-month gain of 9.5% reflects Ethereum's broader recovery over that period. The fund paid a $0.0422 cash dividend on October 5, its most recent income distribution from staking rewards. There are no earnings events or analyst coverage to factor in.
What changes the picture from here is whether short interest stays low or begins rebuilding: at 2.6% of the float with ample borrow supply and low cost, there is no technical friction preventing new shorts from establishing positions if sentiment toward Ethereum shifts.
