Antero Resources heads into its October 28 earnings date with short sellers rebuilding positions, options traders turning more bullish than they have been all year, and a cluster of analysts cutting targets while holding Buy ratings.
The options market is sending the clearest signal this week. The put/call ratio has collapsed to 0.45, more than two standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.58, and close to the 52-week low of 0.36. That means call buying has dominated to an unusual degree, with investors using options to position for upside rather than hedge against downside. The move stands in sharp contrast to the cautious options tone that prevailed through most of September, when the PCR ran consistently above 0.60.
Short positioning tells a different story. Short interest has climbed for the third consecutive week, rising 7% over the past seven days to reach 5.04% of free float, with a single-session jump of 4.3% on October 7 alone. The borrow market, however, offers no support for a squeeze thesis: availability is extremely loose at over 2,100% of short interest, meaning shares are plentiful relative to what is already borrowed. Cost to borrow has edged up 43% over the past month but remains low in absolute terms at 0.44%, nowhere near the level that would signal stress. The short score has ticked up modestly to 40.9, near its highest reading of the past two weeks, but the overall setup is one of measured rebuilding rather than aggressive conviction from bears.
The Street is broadly positive on AR but has spent the past week trimming ambitions. Four firms cut price targets between October 2 and October 8, with Mizuho, UBS, Truist, and Jefferies all lowering numbers while keeping Buy-equivalent ratings. The reductions ranged from $4 to $6 per target, with the consensus mean now at $49.14 against a current price of $35.57, implying roughly 38% upside. Goldman Sachs and Raymond James raised targets in early September, so the recent move is a reversal of momentum at the top of the range. Stifel reinstated coverage in mid-September with a Hold at $42, a notable dissent from the bullish chorus. EV/EBITDA is running at 5.1x, with the PE at 8.1x after contracting nearly a full turn over the past month. The EPS momentum scores are soft, ranking in the 23rd percentile on a 90-day basis, and the analyst recommendation differential ranks in just the 4th percentile, a sign the consensus is already stretched to the bullish side.
Retail attention has picked up. Wikipedia pageview data from the Wikimedia Foundation shows an attention z-score of 1.9 against the stock's own 90-day history, the highest in recent weeks. This is a measure of interest, not a revenue signal, but the timing, three weeks before the Q3 print, suggests the stock is drawing more eyes than usual.
Among institutional holders, Dimensional Fund Advisors added 2.46 million shares in the most recently reported quarter, the largest incremental buy among the top holders. BlackRock added around 878,000 shares. FMR cut its stake from 8.2% to 5.4% as of its August filing, a more meaningful reduction. On the insider register, all recent Form 4 activity involves restricted share grants to directors from July, none of the open-market purchases or sales that would carry directional weight. The $6.7 million sale by an officer in May was executed under a pre-arranged 10b5-1 plan, reducing its signalling value further.
Natural gas peers moved in a tight pack this week. RRC gained 7.5%, EQT rose 7.7%, and CRK led the group with nearly 12%, while AR added 6.5%. The sector-wide bid reflects improving gas price sentiment, and AR's slightly softer relative performance is consistent with its short interest building against a rising tape.
With Q3 results due October 28, the key question heading into the print is whether the bullish options positioning and analyst price-target discipline can coexist with a short base that has been quietly growing for six consecutive weeks.
