SOPHiA GENETICS enters the final stretch before its November 3 earnings report having shed 15% over the past week, with a coordinated wave of executive share sales adding a layer of noise to an already weakening tape.
The insider activity is the clearest signal this week. On October 5, every member of the senior leadership team filed sales on the same day: the CEO, CFO, CTO, CSO, CMO, Chief Legal Officer, Chief People Officer, Chief Sales Officer, and Executive Chairman all sold shares simultaneously. The largest single transaction was Executive Chairman Jurgi Camblong's disposal of 40,172 shares at around $8.13, worth approximately $327,000. CEO Ross Muken sold 9,838 shares for roughly $80,000. Crucially, the vast majority of these trades were executed under pre-arranged 10b5-1 plans, which means they were scheduled well in advance and carry far less signal about near-term conviction than discretionary sales would. The exception is Chief Sales Officer Kevin Puylaert, whose two small sales totalling 216 shares were not under a plan. Net insider selling over the past 90 days stands at around 357,000 shares, worth roughly $2.6 million in aggregate.
The borrow market offers no meaningful tension to set against the price drop. Short interest is just 1.4% of the free float, down around 2% over the past month, and availability is essentially unconstrained, with more than 54 million shares available to borrow against fewer than one million currently shorted. Borrow costs have crept up around 17% over the past week to 5.5%, but remain within the range they have occupied for months and do not point to any fresh conviction among short sellers. Options positioning is equally quiet: the put/call ratio is near its 52-week low at 0.0037, fractionally below its 20-day average, meaning the options market is not registering unusual demand for downside protection despite the sell-off.
The Street remains constructive, though the most recent analyst actions are now two months old. After the August 4 results, both active analysts raised their targets: BTIG lifted to $9 and HC Wainwright moved to $14, both maintaining Buy ratings. Against a current price of $7.15, the mean target of $9.75 implies roughly 36% upside on those older estimates. The bull case rests on SOPH's cloud-based genomics platform, 117% net dollar retention in Q1 2026, and full-year revenue guidance of $92 million to $94 million, representing growth of around 19% to 22%. Bears point to the platform's difficulty converting volume growth into revenue growth, with 2024 revenue up just 4% despite 11% volume growth, and an operating model that remains loss-making. The EV/EBITDA multiple is deeply negative at around -26, reflecting a company still burning cash. The forward EPS trajectory ranks in the 91st percentile for year-on-year improvement, suggesting the Street sees a path to profitability, but momentum scores on EPS estimates over both 30 and 90 days have turned negative, flagging some near-term estimate erosion.
Institutional ownership is broadly stable. Generation Investment Management holds around 8% of shares with no change reported at last filing. Aigh Capital Management added its full 3.95 million share position in the quarter to June, as did Columbia Management and Silvercrest, all building new positions. Royce & Associates added 1.57 million shares in the same period. These are meaningful accumulations, and they sit at odds with the price action of the past month, though all filings reflect positions as of June 30 at the latest and may not capture more recent moves.
The August earnings print is the most instructive data point for what to watch on November 3: the stock jumped 11% on the day and 34% over the five sessions that followed, its strongest post-results reaction on record. Whether the November print, which will cover a period when the stock has given back much of that gain, can repeat the dynamic depends on whether revenue growth is accelerating toward the top of that $92 million to $94 million guidance range.
