WeRide heads into its November 12 earnings date with shorts rebuilding, borrow availability near the floor of its annual range, and the stock down 17% over the past month.
The most telling signal this week is in the lending market. Availability has been running between 7% and 15% for most of the past six weeks, meaning fewer than one share remains available for every six already borrowed. It briefly touched its 52-week low of 7.2% on September 23, and even after a modest easing to 14.2%, the borrow market remains extremely tight by any measure. Cost to borrow has climbed 43% over the past month to 1.56%, underscoring how much demand there is for short exposure at a time when the stock itself is falling. Short interest has edged up 8% over the week to roughly 4.2% of the free float, a modest absolute level but one that has been rising steadily since mid-September. The ORTEX short score, a composite measure of short-side pressure, has drifted higher to 65.2, placing WeRide in the bottom decile of its universe for utilization rank and second percentile for days-to-cover. Put together, the borrow picture is one of constrained but persistent short demand against a backdrop of limited share supply.
Options positioning tells a different story. The put/call ratio of 0.13 is almost exactly in line with its 20-day average and sits close to its 52-week low, meaning call volume is running at a much higher proportion than puts. That is an unusually skewed ratio for a stock losing ground this fast, and suggests that at least part of the options market is positioned for a bounce rather than further downside. The z-score is a marginal -0.41, so there is no statistically unusual defensiveness here, whatever is driving the stock lower is not yet showing up in hedging demand via the options market.
The Street's formal positioning is constructive on paper but increasingly stale. All coverage initiations were Buy-rated, from HSBC at $11.40 in March 2026, BofA Securities at $12 in December 2025, Citigroup at $15.50 in September 2025, UBS at $12 in August 2025, and JP Morgan at $21 from January 2025. The consensus mean target of $89.62 looks inconsistent with a $4.96 stock and targets set in the $11 to $21 range, and should not be taken at face value. The more relevant read is that no firm has upgraded, downgraded, or refreshed a target in the past six months, leaving the analyst picture frozen while the stock has lost nearly a third of its value. Factor scores reflect the same tension: sector rank is neutral at 50th percentile, but short score rank sits at just the 10th and dividend score at 20th.
One item on the ownership register is worth carrying. Alliance Ventures B.V. filed a Schedule 13D in October 2025, declaring activist intent at a 7.2% stake. That filing is now nearly a year old. The 13D register also shows Zhengzhou Xuxin Industrial trimming its position from 8.06% to 6.75% in a February 2026 amendment, while Uber Technologies holds roughly 5.7% on a passive 13G. As always with these disclosures, stakes are as-last-filed and a holder that drops below 5% may not file again. Morgan Stanley Investment Management added over 5.7 million shares to reach 4.3% of the company as of June, the most recent substantial institutional addition visible in the data.
Recent retail attention has spiked relative to WeRide's own history. Wikipedia page views for the company hit a z-score of 2.2 against the prior 90 days as of late September, a reading that reflects attention, not a financial signal, but it suggests the stock has entered a more active public conversation. The one confirmed earnings reaction on record, from the August 12 print, was a 6% fall on the day and a further 4% by the end of the week. The next print is due November 12.
The weeks ahead will be shaped less by whether shorts add further and more by whether the absence of fresh analyst engagement and the tight borrow market produce a catalyst that forces any side to move.
