Short sellers made their sharpest moves this week in housing and consumer names, according to ORTEX data as of October 7.
LEN saw the biggest jump among large-caps. Lennar's short interest rose to 14.1% of free float, up 3.8 percentage points in seven days. Bears are betting housing demand cools further as mortgage rates stay elevated.
NYT was not far behind. The New York Times saw shorts climb to 13.3% of free float, up 3.6 points on the week. GAP also drew fresh attention, with shorts reaching 16.1% of float, a 3.1 point increase.
MDT caught the eye most sharply in percentage terms. Medtronic's short interest nearly tripled week-on-week, rising from 1.4% to 3.6% of free float.
On the other side, saw short sellers back off. Signet Jewelers' SI fell to 15.3% from 17.3%. also saw covering, dropping to 23.1% from 24.8%.
