The standout signal this week comes from Finland's national vehicle register. Finnish authorities recorded 4,337 new battery-electric car registrations in September 2026. That is the highest September total since records began in 2014. It beats the previous September record of 3,002, set in 2023. Year-on-year, Finnish BEV registrations rose 68% against September 2025, when 2,589 vehicles were logged. The scale of the jump is notable: a 44% increase on the prior record in a single month.
Away from EVs, a reactor linked to AEP produced a starkly different kind of record. Nuclear output data tracked by ORTEX showed the unit logging output 10.0 standard deviations below its own history on 29 September 2026. That is a severe outlier in the dataset. AEP carries short interest of 4.7% of free float, according to ORTEX data as of 8 October. The drop in reactor output does not, on its own, tell investors what caused it or how long it will last.
Korean airport traffic moved in the opposite direction. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport figures showed 238,383 flights and 38.8 million passengers in September 2026. Both were record September highs since the dataset begins in 2023, surpassing the previous bests set in September 2025.
Japan's machine tool orders also came in strongly. Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association data showed domestic orders rose 62% year-on-year in August 2026 to JPY 51,517 million. The order backlog climbed 45% over the same period to JPY 1,059,655 million.
Retail attention data from Wikipedia page-view tracking showed SSMR and NCEW both registering views 10.0 standard deviations above their own histories, on 29 September and 23 September respectively. Those readings sit at the outer edge of the distribution for the dataset.
Not all the real-economy prints pointed upward. Singapore Tourism Board figures showed visitor arrivals from Indonesia in August 2026 were the lowest for that month in three years. Arrivals from India were the lowest August reading in two years. Both streaks run against the broader travel recovery visible elsewhere in the region.
