BLK heads into its October 14 earnings report with options traders the most bullish they have been all year, even as analysts have spent the past week quietly marking down their price targets.
The call-heavy skew in options is the sharpest signal in the setup. The put/call ratio has fallen to 0.69, the lowest reading of the past 52 weeks and roughly 1.15 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.77. That means demand for upside exposure is running unusually high relative to hedging activity. The stock itself has added 2.1% over the past week to $1,082.39, recovering some of the 1.2% lost over the prior month. Short interest is a non-story: just 1.3% of the float is short, borrow availability is effectively unlimited, and the cost to borrow has fallen more than 56% over the week to 0.24%. There is no meaningful bearish pressure from the lending market.
The analyst picture complicates that optimism in a specific way. Since our previous note on October 7, Evercore ISI trimmed its target to $1,275 from $1,300 and Wells Fargo edged down to $1,230 from $1,245, both on Thursday. That follows UBS cutting to $1,277 and Barclays to $1,420 earlier in the week. The direction of travel on targets is clearly lower, and it has continued since we last wrote. Yet no firm has budged on its rating. The consensus mean target remains around $1,313, roughly 21% above the current price, and the analyst recommendation factor ranks in the 96th percentile of the ORTEX universe. Bulls are focused on AUM momentum and organic base fee growth that has exceeded the company's own 5% long-run target. Bears point to margin compression: operating margin estimates have been revised down to the low-to-mid 40s for 2025 and 2026, with G&A expenses growing at a double-digit pace. The earnings print will be the first test of whether those cost pressures are stabilising or widening.
One ownership detail is worth noting. Wellington Management added 850,000 shares in the most recent reported period, one of the largest additions among the top holders. Vanguard Capital holds 6.87% of the class per its April Schedule 13G filing, though as with all 13D/G stakes, that position is as last disclosed and may have changed since. The insider register shows only small director share grants in late September, compensation mechanics rather than open-market conviction, and the 90-day net insider position is negative at roughly 20,000 shares sold, worth around $22 million.
Wednesday's print will test whether BLK can hold its fee rate and narrow the gap between what analysts expect on costs and what management has been willing to guide.
