German new-car registrations delivered the month's headline number. Battery-electric vehicle sign-ups hit 88,335 in September, up 95% on the same month last year. The figures come from the German vehicle register, tracked by ORTEX. Total new car registrations in Germany reached 255,698, the largest September on record since 2021. That beat the previous best of 234,575 set in September 2025. Finland added its own marker: battery-electric registrations there hit 4,337, the highest reading since the Finnish series began in 2014.
Away from roads, Japan's machine tool sales data tells a similar story of strengthening activity. Final sales reached JPY 147,354 million in August, up 27% on the same month last year and the largest August on record since 2009, according to the Japanese machine tool publishers tracked by ORTEX. That combination of a record level and a double-digit year-on-year gain points to broad industrial demand across Asian supply chains.
Korean air traffic data from ORTEX showed a divergence in September. Domestic passengers fell 11% year on year to 13.9 million. International passengers rose 10% to 24.9 million. The gap suggests outbound and inbound international travel is recovering faster than internal Korean demand.
Two company-level signals stood out in the ORTEX alternative data layer this week. Wikipedia views for LFTO, the mobile advertising platform Liftoff Mobile, ran 10.0 standard deviations above their own history as of 29 September. Retail attention at that magnitude is an unusual reading for any name. At SO, The Southern Company, nuclear reactor output sat 10.0 standard deviations below its own history as of 23 September. Neither reading is described in the ORTEX dataset as a measured leading indicator for a forthcoming print, so both are noted as where the data currently points, not a signal for what results will show.
