TROW heads into its October 29 quarterly print with short sellers holding a structurally elevated position and the analyst community steadily marking down price targets, even as the stock stabilises near $105.
At 12% of free float, short interest in T. Rowe Price is genuinely significant and has been building. The position has grown roughly 3.5% over the past month, with the ORTEX short score sitting at 72.4, a level that has been remarkably stable across the past two weeks, suggesting bears are committed rather than reactive. That said, the lending market offers little incentive to rush additional shorts: availability is ample at 291%, meaning there are nearly three shares available to borrow for every share already shorted, and cost to borrow is just 0.53%, effectively free. Days to cover stands at 17.2, so any unwind would be slow, but there is no squeeze pressure building from the borrow side. Options positioning has actually grown more bullish recently. The put/call ratio has dropped to 0.75, below its 20-day average of 0.79, and well off the 0.97 level it was running at through much of September. That divergence, shorts building while options traders lean toward calls, is the tension at the heart of this week's setup.
The Street is broadly neutral, but the direction of travel on price targets is clearly downward. Evercore ISI's Glenn Schorr cut his target to $109 this week, the third time he has moved it lower since August, each time maintaining an In-Line rating. Morgan Stanley's Michael Cyprys trimmed to $110 from $116 on September 25, also staying at Equal-Weight. UBS assumed coverage with a Neutral and a $107 target on October 7. The consensus price target now sits at $107, barely above the current $105.16, implying the Street sees very limited upside from here. Valuation multiples put the stock at 10.3x trailing earnings and 6.5x EV/EBITDA, both broadly flat over the past month. The factor score picture is mixed: TROW ranks in the 80th percentile on earnings surprise history and 85th for dividend quality, but scores in just the 20th percentile for forward EPS momentum, consistent with the bear case around declining average AUM and fee rate pressure.
Bulls point to $1.767 trillion in AUM, a retirement-heavy client base that is stickier than typical retail funds, and ETF net inflows of $2.5 billion in the second quarter as evidence the firm is making progress in channels it historically neglected. Bears counter that the advisory segment already missed by $0.11 per share last quarter, with core fee rates running below expectations and operating margins deteriorating. Neither side looks ready to capitulate: the institutional register is dominated by passive giants, with BlackRock holding 11.2% and Vanguard entities accounting for a further 7% or so, leaving relatively little room for aggressive active repositioning ahead of the print.
On the index front, ORTEX puts a 37% probability on TROW being reclassified in the CRSP December 2026 Quarterly Review, specifically a potential move from the US Mid or Large index into the US Small cap index given current market cap levels around $22.4 billion. The price that would flip the call is $98.72, roughly 6% below current levels. That review rank date falls on December 4, so it is not an immediate catalyst, but it sits in the background for any investor thinking about passive ownership flows into year-end.
The prior two earnings prints saw the stock fall approximately 4.8% and 6.0% on the day respectively, both recovering only partially over the following week. With the stock down 3.9% over the past month and the analyst community offering just 1.5% upside to consensus target, what to watch on October 29 is less whether AUM held up and more whether management signals any credible path to stabilising fee rates and reversing the margin slide that has defined the past two quarters.
