LightPath Technologies heads into its November 5 earnings report carrying one of the heavier short burdens in its peer group, while the stock has shed nearly 12% in a week.
Short interest is the defining feature of this setup. Bears hold 26.2% of the free float, a position that has grown by 14% over the past month even as shares fell. The ORTEX daily estimate puts short shares at roughly 11.9 million, and the official FINRA fortnightly reading of 12.1 million as of September 30 tells a similar story. Days to cover stands at 4.67, meaning unwinding would take the better part of a week at normal volumes. The ORTEX short score of 70.2 ranks in the bottom 3% of the universe on the short-score percentile, a reading that has barely moved over the past two weeks despite the price decline.
The borrow market tells a more nuanced story. Despite the high short interest level, availability has tightened noticeably this week, dropping to 78% from roughly 98% seven days ago. That is the lowest reading in the past 30 days and matches the 52-week low for availability. Borrowing costs, however, remain near the floor at 0.59%. That combination of abundant shares borrowed but an availability drop worth watching reflects the sharp build in short positions over September and early October. Options positioning gives little away: the put/call ratio of 0.39 is slightly below its 20-day average of 0.40, and the z-score is essentially flat at -0.48, suggesting options traders are not adding meaningful downside protection ahead of the print.
The Street's view is uniformly constructive but growing cautious on price. Canaccord Genuity maintains its Buy but lowered its target to $15.50 from $16.50 in September, citing no change in view but acknowledging near-term pressure. Piper Sandler initiated at Overweight with a $15.00 target in August. The mean analyst target of $15.80 implies more than 60% upside to the current $9.72 close, a gap that looks striking but reflects analyst estimates that were largely set when the stock traded in the $12 to $14 range. The bull case centres on a $100 million-plus backlog and growing defense demand for LightPath's BlackDiamond infrared material. Bears point to customer concentration, dilution risk from the capital raise earlier this year, and the premium the stock still commands relative to peers on an EV/EBITDA basis of 36x. Factor scores add weight to the cautious read: EPS surprise ranks in the bottom 3% of the universe, and the dividend score is low, though forward EPS momentum over 90 days sits in the top percentile.
The most consequential ownership event of recent months was North Run Strategic Opportunities Fund, an activist holder on a Schedule 13D, selling 3.57 million shares at $14.00 in early June and trimming a further 265,000 shares across May. North Run's stake has fallen from 14.7% to 9.6% as last disclosed on June 4. That is still a meaningful position, but the direction of travel is clear: the activist that first filed in February 2025 has been distributing into strength. Meanwhile, BlackRock filed a fresh 13G in July disclosing a 6.5% position, and Hood River Capital filed a new 13G in August with a 5.37% stake, both passive. The standard caveat applies: Schedule 13D/G positions are as-last-disclosed around the 5% threshold, and holders can reduce below that level without a further filing.
The peer group offers little comfort this week. OUST fell 10.1% on the week and OPTX dropped 11.5%, tracking LPTH's decline closely. The outlier is FN, up nearly 5% over the same period, suggesting company-specific pressure rather than a sector-wide selloff is the dominant factor for LPTH.
With earnings confirmed for November 5, the 25 days ahead are when the short position will face its sharpest test: whether the backlog converts to revenue growth and whether the margin story holds after the capital raise-related dilution weighs on per-share metrics.
