Options markets are flashing caution this week. Earnings season is picking up pace. Traders are buying protection before several big prints.
UAL is the clearest case. Analysts cut price targets on United Airlines ahead of its Q3 report. Options hedging has persisted through the week, according to ORTEX data. UAL is down 3.9% year-to-date and carries a DTC of 1.4 days. The stock's RSI sits at 42, well below neutral. Analysts still see 42% upside from here, but the options flow tells a more cautious story.
CNS is another name drawing attention. Cohen & Steers options positioning turned heavily defensive ahead of Thursday's print, per ORTEX signals. With a DTC of 6.2 and an RSI of just 25, the market is pricing in real downside risk.
ACI bears are also holding firm. Short sellers in Albertsons have not budged heading into its report. That stubbornness in short positioning, combined with defensive options flow, suggests the bear case remains alive.
On the index side, RBRK grabbed attention from a different angle. ORTEX Index Rebalance Radar puts its MSCI World addition probability at 91%, up sharply overnight. If confirmed on 19 October, trackers face $990M of forced buying. That flow alone could generate sharp upside options activity into the 30 November effective date.
Meanwhile, ORTEX alt data flagged an unusual reading for XEL. Xcel Energy's nuclear reactor output fell 10 standard deviations below its own history as of 10 October. That is an extreme operational reading. Watch for any options re-pricing if the outage extends further into the quarter.
