Semiconductor bears are retreating fast. Short interest in SOXX, the iShares Semiconductor ETF, tumbled 20.5% in a single week to 19.5% of float, the lowest level since early September. Concurrently, short positions in the inverse SOXS saw utilization hit 90.69% as short shares dropped 20% in one day. The two moves together signal a rapid unwind of chip-sector hedges.
The borrow market is tightening in the other direction. SMH, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, saw its cost to borrow double to 1.11% in a week. Demand to short the sector has not vanished entirely. It has just become more expensive.
On the options side, MU (Micron Technology) and NVDA (NVIDIA) top the ORTEX screen for both positive and negative options bets over the past seven days. That two-sided flow points to traders positioning around upcoming prints rather than making directional calls. Micron carries a 51% analyst upside estimate and a near-perfect ORTEX stock score of 99.1.
ALLY is a different story. Morgan Stanley cut the auto lender to Equal-Weight and slashed its target 22% to $43, citing margin pressure in consumer auto lending. Separately, ORTEX Alt Data shows VA loans guaranteed fell for a third consecutive month in September 2026, reaching 43,068. Weakness in government-backed mortgage volumes adds context to the cautious tone on consumer lending names.
XEL (Xcel Energy) is worth watching for a different reason. ORTEX Alt Data recorded reactor output 10.0 standard deviations below Xcel's own history on 11 October 2026, an extreme operational reading that options traders have not yet flagged at elevated volume. Any headline on that outage could change that quickly.
