Short sellers made sharp moves last week. Two names stand out from the noise.
CHWY leads the weekly surge table. Short interest as a percentage of free float hit 87.3%, up from 67.4% just one week ago. That is a near 20 percentage point jump. The pet e-commerce retailer has shed 9% over three months. With availability at 473%, shares are still easy to borrow, suggesting the bear case has room to build further.
MDT is the bigger surprise. Short interest in Medtronic jumped from 1.6% to 10.1% of free float in a single week. The medical device giant carries a $113bn market cap, making that kind of move rare. Bears appear to be stepping up against one of the sector's stalwarts.
WOLF also saw its SI rise to 87.3% from 80.4%, cementing its place among the most shorted mid-cap names. The semiconductor company has struggled for three consecutive months, dropping 13%.
MMED sits at 89.2% SI of free float, the highest among names with a market cap above $1bn. The ORTEX short score stands at 91. Availability is near zero at 0.5%, making new short positions extremely hard to open.
On the macro front, ORTEX alt data shows Ireland recorded its biggest September car market since 2014, with battery-electric licensings up 54% year on year. That tailwind sits in contrast to the short pressure building on US consumer names.
