The US Department of Veterans Affairs guaranteed 43,072 loans in September 2026, according to VA lender volume data tracked by ORTEX. That marked the third consecutive monthly decline in loan count. Dollar volume fell in parallel, dropping to $17.2bn in September, also a third straight monthly fall. Together the two series paint a consistent picture of softening demand in the government-backed mortgage market. A single down month can be noise. Three in a row is a trend.
Across the Atlantic, vehicle registration data tells a more varied story. Austrian new car registration figures, sourced from the national registry, rose 13% year on year in September to 28,968 vehicles. The gain was broad-based across fuel types. Ireland moved more sharply in the electric direction. Battery-electric car licensing data published by the Irish register recorded 3,074 new BEV licensings in September, the largest September on record since the series began in 2024. That compared with 2,000 in September 2025, a 54% increase year on year. The two European datasets point to sustained consumer appetite for new vehicles, even as US housing-adjacent demand weakens.
GM reports on 20 October. The ORTEX German car registration dataset has a measured, out-of-sample lead on GM's reported revenue, with the two series showing a strong fit and the lead running approximately 15 days ahead of the reported figures. With all three months of the current quarter now in, that dataset is running 133% above the same quarter last year. This is where the German registration data is pointing so far for the quarter GM will report. It is not a forecast of the revenue print or the share price.
