Interactive Brokers reports Q3 results today with a notable late shift in the short interest data that complicates what had looked like a clean pre-earnings setup.
Short interest jumped 12% in a single session on October 9, pushing the total to 3.1% of the free float, up 66% from a month ago. That is a meaningful move in absolute terms, though the borrow market tells a very different story: availability remains essentially unlimited, with over 273 million shares available to borrow against a short position of roughly 13.6 million. Cost to borrow has actually fallen sharply, down 34% on the week to 0.24%, one of the lowest readings in the past 30 days. The lending market is not signalling conviction behind the new shorts. They have added positions without squeezing supply at all. Options positioning has shifted modestly more defensive, with the put/call ratio at 0.77, about 1.3 standard deviations above its 20-day mean, but still well below the 52-week high of 0.93. The stock itself is down 3.8% over the past month to $87.89, giving back some of a strong year-to-date gain.
The analyst community, by contrast, has been pulling in a consistent direction. Evercore ISI initiated with an Outperform and a $100 target on the day of the print. Barclays maintained Overweight and raised its target to $115 just last week. Bank of America kept its Buy rating and lifted to $116. The mean price target across ten buy-rated analysts is $104, about 18% above current levels. Two initiations in the past two weeks, from Wells Fargo (Overweight, $102) and Evercore ISI, add fresh institutional coverage at a constructive moment. The one note of restraint comes from UBS, which trimmed its target by $1 to $101 while holding Neutral. BMO Capital also clipped its target from $110 to $105, though it kept Outperform. The bull case rests on sustained trading volume, net interest income from client cash balances, and continued client account growth. Bears, to the extent they exist in the analyst community, point to valuation: the stock trades at roughly 28x trailing earnings and 5x book, multiples that have compressed modestly over the past month as the share price pulled back.
Ownership is broadly passive and stable. BlackRock added over 1.7 million shares in the most recently reported quarter, lifting its stake to 7.3% of shares. State Street and Geode both added smaller positions. The activist register carries no 13D filers. Insider activity in the 90-day window is negligible in economic terms: director Lori Conkling has been buying 25 shares per month under a 10b5-1 plan, a mechanical purchase programme with limited signalling value.
The Q3 print is therefore a test of whether the operational momentum that drove a 37% year-to-date gain into October can hold up against a stock that has given back ground, a fresh cohort of shorts that built positions into the number, and a Street that is broadly bullish but has not moved targets aggressively higher in recent weeks.
