Bank of America's dramatic reversal on CRM is reshaping the lending market. A 78% price target increase and a flip from Underperform to Buy, the widest single-note swing in the analyst record, has coincided with a sharp unwind of short positions over the past week.
Tal Liani at B of A Securities raised his target from $160 to $285 on Monday. The stock was trading at $229.13 at the time, implying 24% upside at the new target. The firm had been one of only a handful of bears on Salesforce. The broader analyst picture is now heavily skewed: 34 buy ratings versus one underperform, with a consensus target of $285.68.
The upgrade drew on Salesforce's accelerating cRPO growth of 14% in Q2 and the early commercial traction of its Agentforce and Data platforms, which together reached $3.9 billion in ARR, up 210% year on year. With next earnings due on 2 December, the structural AI monetisation thesis is becoming harder for sceptics to dismiss.
Short interest at 3.5% of free float is not extreme, but the direction and speed of the move are notable. Positions fell 12.9% in one week and are down around 15% over two days. That rate of unwind points to reactive covering, not a scheduled exit.
The borrowing market reflects the same shift. Cost to borrow fell 65% over the week to 0.22% annually, the lowest in more than a month. Availability sits at 3,165%, meaning there are roughly 32 shares available for every one already borrowed. The lending pool is wide open. There is no mechanical squeeze risk here; this is straightforward position reduction by shorts who have reassessed the thesis.
The ORTEX short score dropped to 36.2 as of 9 October, down from 38.8 at the start of the month, consistent with the easing short pressure. The put-call ratio stands at 0.96, just below its 20-day average of 1.00 and well off the 52-week high of 1.20 touched in September. Options markets have shifted from a moderately defensive tilt to broadly neutral.
BlackRock added roughly 1.05 million shares as of 30 September. Capital Research added 900,000. T. Rowe Price added 2.8 million shares as of June. Institutional accumulation at the large-cap level has been moving in the opposite direction to short interest for several weeks.
Wikipedia attention for Salesforce registered a z-score of 1.84 against its own 90-day history as of mid-September, above normal but not at a speculative extreme.
What to watch: the 2 December earnings date is 50 days out. If the B of A upgrade attracts further covering and the cost to borrow stays this low, the short-side pressure on CRM going into that print will be the lightest it has been in some time.
