Geopolitical jitters and an AI stock rout pushed options markets into defensive posture on Tuesday. Bearish bets dominated screens, with negative options flows most concentrated in the semiconductor sector.
NVDA led the negative bets leaderboard by a wide margin. The stock is down 21% from its 2026 highs. Analyst Dan Ives called the selloff a buying opportunity, naming seven AI winners. That backdrop keeps two-way options flow elevated.
PLTR and CRWD also appeared prominently in the unusual activity sweep. Both carry elevated short scores above 51 and 44 respectively. That combination of high short interest and active options flow signals the market is split on near-term direction.
Oil added another layer. Saudi Civil Defense alerts in Riyadh province pushed USO options volume sharply higher. Traders reached for near-term calls as crude reacted to Middle East news.
On the index rebalance front, MRNA stands 74% above the MSCI World entry line. A 90% probability forecast points to $4.8bn of forced buying. That can suppress put buying in the name even as sentiment elsewhere sours.
FLUT faces the opposite pressure. Its MSCI World deletion probability jumped to 86% overnight. $589m of forced selling is expected over 2.5 days of volume.
GM reports on 20 October. German car registration data, which leads GM revenue by 15 days, is running 133% above the same quarter last year. That read could shape options positioning into the print.
