Weyerhaeuser shares have shed 14% over the past month. Yet this week, B of A Securities turned buyer. The divergence between analyst conviction and bearish positioning is sharpening ahead of a 15-day earnings window.
George Staphos at B of A Securities upgraded WY to Buy on Tuesday, lowering his price target to $25 from $28 but lifting his rating from Neutral. The stock trades at $18.97. That implies roughly 32% upside to his target.
The move runs against the grain. Truist Securities cut its target to $24 from $28 last week while holding at Hold. Citigroup held at Buy but trimmed to $21 from $29 in early October. Three separate firms reduced price targets in five weeks. B of A stepped up anyway.
The bull case rests on timberland value and REIT structure. Analysts tracking the name cite a wide discount to estimated NAV and the view that cyclical wood products headwinds from transportation constraints are near-term rather than structural. The bear case points to EPS estimates cut 5% to $0.37 for the full year, with lumber and OSB realisation assumptions now more conservative.
The options market has taken the same side as B of A. The put-call ratio stands at 0.36, nearly 1.9 standard deviations below its 20-day mean of 0.45. That is the narrowest PCR reading in recent weeks, and it has held near these levels for three consecutive sessions. Call buyers are dominating.
This is not a single-day anomaly. The PCR ran above 0.50 through September and has compressed steadily since early October, coinciding with the stock's oversold stretch.
Short interest sits at 4.05% of free float, up 13% over the past week to 29.2 million shares. The one-month change is more modest at 5.7%, suggesting the bulk of new shorting arrived in a single week.
Borrow conditions remain loose. Availability stands at 2,180% of current short interest, well above any stress level. The cost to borrow has actually fallen, dropping to 0.37% as of Tuesday from 0.44% last week. Shorts have no difficulty finding stock to borrow, and the borrow cost is among the lowest it has been in over a month.
ORTEX forecasts a 30% probability that WY leaves the MSCI USA, MSCI World and MSCI Kokusai indices at the November 2026 Quarterly Review. The rank date is October 19, with announcement due November 11 and trade date November 30. The stock needs to close above $20.80 to stay in. It currently sits at $18.97, 9.6% below that line. If the deletion is confirmed, index trackers would need to sell an estimated $816 million of shares across MSCI World alone, equivalent to 6.7 days of average volume.
That is the mechanical pressure sitting in the background as earnings approach on October 29.
What to watch: The October 19 rank date for the MSCI review arrives before the October 29 earnings print. Price action in that window will determine whether the index deletion trade materialises alongside whatever the quarterly results deliver.
