Axon Enterprise heads into its November 3 earnings report with an unusual split: options traders have turned the most bullish they have been all year, while short sellers have spent the past month steadily adding to their positions.
The options signal is the sharpest data point this week. The put/call ratio has fallen to 0.8529, nearly 2.7 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 1.01. That is the lowest PCR reading in the past 52 weeks, the prior floor was 0.8529, meaning today's print marks the most call-heavy positioning of the year. The shift is abrupt. Through September the ratio held stubbornly above 1.05, reflecting a defensive bias that has now reversed in a single week. Whether that represents genuine conviction in the stock or pre-earnings call-buying for leverage is the question the positioning raises but cannot answer.
Short interest tells a less comfortable story. Bears have added roughly 32% more short exposure over the past month, with SI climbing to 4.7% of the free float, up 6.9% on the week alone. The pace is notable: positions were near 2.82 million shares in early September and have climbed to 3.73 million without a material pullback. Yet the borrow market shows no stress whatsoever. Cost to borrow is a negligible 0.52%, and availability is extremely loose at 808%, meaning there are more than eight shares available to lend for every one already borrowed. Shorts are rebuilding, but they face no friction doing so, and there is no squeeze dynamic in the lending market to accelerate a reversal.
The Street remains broadly bullish, though the gap between analyst targets and the current price is extreme and worth caveating. The mean price target of $697 implies a return of around 69% from the $413 close, a spread that reflects August's wave of target raises. After Axon's Q2 print, Barclays lifted its target to $688, Morgan Stanley moved to $640, and Piper Sandler pushed to $732, all while maintaining positive ratings. Argus Research followed in September with a raise to $600. Only UBS sits on the sidelines with a Neutral rating. The bull case centres on a $14.3 billion contracted backlog, 44% backlog growth, 75% bookings growth, and a 29% revenue CAGR guided through FY28. The bear case is more concise: the stock has already lost about 32% from its highs, the customer base remains heavily concentrated in US public safety, and valuation multiples are still demanding even after the pullback, with the trailing P/E near 42 times and EV/EBITDA at 28 times.
The institutional register is large and active. BlackRock holds 10.3% and added 345,000 shares in the quarter to September. FMR added 544,000 shares over the same period, the largest net add among the top holders. T. Rowe Price added over a million shares, reaching 2.3% of the company. Founder and CEO Patrick Smith holds 3.8% directly. Insider activity in the 90 days to October 1 ran net negative, with roughly $17 million in net selling across 90 days. The CEO's September sales were all conducted under pre-arranged 10b5-1 plans and carry lower informational weight as a result. The Chief Revenue Officer's October 1 transaction (coded F, a tax withholding event rather than a discretionary sale) is similarly a compensation mechanic rather than a directional signal.
The earnings history adds context to the positioning. Axon's Q2 2026 report triggered a 14% single-day drop despite a 34% revenue gain year-on-year, a reminder that the market is pricing in a high bar regardless of the headline growth rate. The prior print, in May, delivered a 5.8% gain on the day and 10.5% over five days. The next report lands on November 3, 20 days away, and retail attention is running below its own 90-day average, a low-attention setup heading into what has historically been a volatile event. Whether the options market's sudden call-heavy tilt reflects well-founded optimism or is simply a mechanical fade of the recent defensive positioning is the tension worth tracking into the print.
