MMM enters its October 20 earnings report with a quietly building tension: options positioning has turned notably more bullish than usual, yet borrowing costs have more than doubled over the past month, hinting that at least some participants are paying more to stay short.
The most telling signal in the positioning data is from options. The put/call ratio has dropped to 0.62, nearly 1.8 standard deviations below its 20-day average of 0.66, putting it toward the more call-heavy end of the past year's range. That marks a clear shift from September, when the ratio was running closer to 0.85 to 0.87. The move suggests investors are reaching for upside exposure ahead of the print rather than protecting against downside. Short interest, by contrast, is a sideshow at 1.8% of the free float, down almost 5% on the week after a brief uptick earlier in October. Borrow availability is essentially unlimited, which means there is no mechanical friction constraining short-sellers. Yet the cost to borrow has climbed to 0.44%, up 44% on the week and more than double its level a month ago. Still cheap in absolute terms, but the direction is worth noting ahead of a catalyst.
The Street remains broadly constructive but has been pulling targets lower in recent weeks. JP Morgan lowered its price target to $185 from $205 on October 9 while keeping its Overweight rating, a sign of diminished conviction even among bulls. Wells Fargo's Stephen Tusa initiated at Equal-Weight with a $195 target on September 25. Bernstein upgraded to Market Perform from Underperform, lifting its target to $171 from $145. That cluster of moves tells a consistent story: analysts who were more negative are edging toward the middle, while those already positive are marking down their ambitions. The mean target of $175.56 implies modest upside from the current $162.77 close. At 16.9x trailing earnings and 11.3x EV/EBITDA, valuation multiples have been broadly stable over the past month. The forward earnings growth score ranks in the 73rd percentile, a bright spot, while EPS surprise sits in a less reassuring 34th percentile.
Earnings history adds context. The Q2 2026 print on July 21 produced a 7.3% one-day gain and a 14.7% five-day move. The prior quarter's release, in April 2026, saw the stock fall 1.6% on the day before recovering to a 6.7% gain over the following week. Two prints, two very different patterns. The bull case rests on continued margin expansion and organic sales growth, with 3M projecting 100 basis points of segment margin improvement in 2026 and upward revisions to its growth guidance. Bears point to ongoing softness in the Consumer segment, China industrial headwinds, and the unresolved tail risk from PFAS litigation.
Wikipedia attention for 3M has been running 2.0 standard deviations above its own 90-day average, one of the higher readings in recent months. That is a retail attention signal rather than a revenue indicator, but it does suggest the upcoming earnings date is drawing interest beyond the usual institutional audience.
Insider activity over the past 90 days shows net selling of roughly 25,000 shares worth around $4.3 million. The recent Form 4 filings on October 7 consist largely of option exercises paired with tax-withholding sales, including from the Group President and EVP Chief Legal Officer. These are compensation mechanics rather than discretionary conviction trades, and should be read accordingly.
On the institutional register, BlackRock added around 2.4 million shares in the quarter to September 30, lifting its stake to 8.7% of shares. JP Morgan Asset Management added around 741,000 shares in the same period. There is no activist on the 13D/G register. ORTEX also puts a 25% probability on MMM being added to the CRSP US Mid index at the December 2026 quarterly review, with the stock currently running 11.2% above the price level that would trigger the rule. That is a candidate story, not a confirmed one.
With the Q3 print six days away, the question is whether the bullish options tilt and analyst upgrades from the sidelines reflect genuine improving fundamentals, or simply positioning ahead of a stock that jumped 7% on its last earnings day.
